Meet the Italian king of hard trance, Luca Antolini, as he gets ready for RAW
Reported by Tara

Actually known as ‘The King of hard trance’ in his native Italy, Luca Antolini is one of the most prolific dance producers around, with over 600 tracks under his belt and his own label, United Styles. Despite making so many tunes however, he’s only just released his first artist album, ‘Mastermind’, many years after he first entered a club at just 14 years old and was instinctively drawn to the DJ behind the decks.
With Luca making a rare London appearance at RAW at the Colosseum this Saturday 2 April - where he’ll be playing back to back with friend and collaborator Andrea Montorsi – it was high time he made his HarderFaster debut…
In the 26 years you’ve been DJing and producing music, you’ve made over 600 epic tracks and played at some amazing events. What have been the highlights of your career so far? And what goals do you have for the future?
The unforgettable moments are numerous, for instance my first appearance in a club and all the massive events where I was playing in front of thousands of people... but above all, this job has made me meet amazing people. I never forget the first time I meet people who become very important in my life.
My goal at the moment is take my album ‘Mastermind’ around the world and the latest releases on United Styles. I would also love to get well known in the UK.
Over the years you’ve dabbled in most styles of dance music, from hardstyle to techno and trance. How would you describe the current Luca Antolini style?
The Luca of today is the same of the Luca of yesterday, always full of enthusiasm and a big heart, only with more experience under his belt. I keep on spreading the word for hard trance with new sounds and sometimes embracing more trance, techno and hardstyle and sometimes even re-introducing old skool hard trance, which I still love.
You’ve been involved in almost every aspect of the music scene, and now run your own label, United Styles. What’s happening with the label right now and what plans do you have for the rest of 2011?
United Styles has been a pleasant surprise also for me, I started it in January 2010 and straight away it has been a growing success. Every day it has become stronger and bigger and now with the release of ‘Mastermind’ it will be a very busy label for the rest of 2011, with the addition of a few remixes from important artists in the genre.
Since you started out 26 years ago the way we play, produce, distribute and promote music has completely changed. How have you had to alter the way you do things over the years to keep up?
Like everyone, I think, by keeping updated with all the different technologies and by way of communicating through the internet.
You’ve just released your first artist album, ‘Mastermind’. Is there a concept behind this album, or is it more of a collection of your current favourite tracks?
Who will handle my album, will be able to find and read a message from me in it which will say:
“During all these years of my career, spent in the studio and on stages all over the world ...
I lived great emotions and great sensations...!!
It would take a lifetime to describe them all in words...
With this album I tried to switch the emotions in hard trance and hard dance music, through sounds and melodies which have always characterised me.
I hope, when listening to this album you will feel the same feelings you have given to me... RESPECT."
As a child you dreamed of becoming a pro footballer until you injured your leg when you were 13. Do you still follow football and if so, what team do you support?
Yes! Football is a sport which I love and follow when I have time. My favourite team is Juventus, who are struggling at the moment. I also love English football as well as the Spanish liga.
When you’re not playing and producing music, what do you like to do to unwind?
Listening to music hahahaha!! I love spending time with my two girls and my wife and with my friends... and doing whatever with them.
I love laughing, I’m a true joker and that is why I make a few jokes sometimes here and there, which can be very funny.
What’s your favourite cocktail recipe?
Coke and rum.
You’re coming to London to play at RAW next Saturday. What can your fans expect from your set? Will we hear some tracks from ‘Mastermind’, or will you stick to the classics?
I will be playing an exclusive London B2B set with the baron, Andrea Montorsi!!! Hahahaha. I will be playing what I see the crowd wants to dance, for that is the most important thing for me.
Finally, after so many years working in the music industry, what advice do you have for up and coming DJs and producers?
To fully believe in it and give yourself a goal to reach or achieve, but primarily be humble towards time and nice with the people involved in it.
