From Hard Dance to Trance - Lisa Lashes Reinvents

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 08-02-11 20:10

With being known as the first lady of hard dance a change of direction is no easy thing but with the decline in hard dance in the UK it's a case of evolve or become extinct and Lisa Lashes is doing just that. We find out a bit more . . .

Hi Lisa, it’s been over 15 months since your last trip down to London, what has been going on in life of Miss Lashes?

It’s all good great thanks for asking, I’ve been doing a lot of touring over the past year playing all around the world in some amazing place and I’ve also been very busy in the studio in between pushing my new international sound and working on my monthly Lashed podcast and radio shows. I also re-launched my Lashed events last year and hosted 7 parties around the U.K and a very special event over in Holland in December with a huge line up of my favorite trance acts including Marcel Woods, Sied Van Riel, Jochen Miller and Ummet Ozcan.

Your Lashed brand in was a great success last year, what do you think the key is to the success of these events especially at a time when clubland is really suffering?

I’ve tried to involve DJ’s that I know will make the musical progression of the night go from strength to strength. It’s not all about one style of music at my lashed events so I choose the DJs very carefully and they’ll make the music I love to play and the way they perform on the decks. It’s all about trying to find fresh talent and DJs I’ve not put on a lashed line-up before including Artento Divini, Jochen miller, Sied van riel, Ummet Ozcan, John O’ Callaghan etc.

What are your plans for Lashed in 2011?

We are planning on taking the brand more international in 2011 with another Lashed Holland date already in and we’re frantically working on the line up to make it even bigger and better than the last one. We are also working on dates in Sweden, Canada, Poland and of course something in the U.K and Ireland. Keep your eyes peeled on my website for new developments.

You play your debut for Gallery at MoS on 18th February showcasing your new international trance sound, can you describe it?

My trance sound is more on the techy vibe with powerful baselines and gritty percussion. I’ve hopefully still retained my love of dirty, darker vibes and I’ve pulled together the parts from my breaks/alternative sets and from my main techy sets to find my own niche.

Who have been your favourite producers recently?

Artento Divini is constantly making great tunes which I always include in my DJ sets. I love Jochen Miller and the Shy Bros too who I had the pleasure of going into the studio with when I was last on tour in Vancouver Canada.

There seem to be so many great new talents coming through the ranks in the trance scene, who are your tips for the top this year?

Artento Divini, Jordan Suckley, The Shy bros, Tigran Oganezov and Ben Gold are all making great waves in the scene at the moment.

You have some big releases in the pipeline including labels such as Spinnin, High Contrast and Musical Madness; can you tell us more about this?

With my trancier style of music I’m producing these labels are perfect for my new sound. I’m also releasing tunes with a bit more of a harder edge on my Lashed label which has been charted on Beatport and got the No1 download on TID recently. Every 3/4 weeks you will see a release from me on the top 5 labels which is exciting for me as it’s a new direction. I’ve been getting some great support from the biggest names in the business which I’m overwhelmed with including John O Callaghan, Gareth Emery, Armin Van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Judge Jules on his radio one show and Bobina on his Russian radio show.

Your Lashed podcast is one of the most listened to dance music podcasts on I-tunes, what do you think makes it so successful?

I try to make my podcasts personal, more banter than usual and interaction as well as great track selection. I also mix the podcast live at home on the decks as I like to do the old skool style of mixing which I’m known for and a lot of people have commented on this as I’m able to put a lot of energy into my mixing.

2010 saw you step things up more internationally touring Australia, Malaysia, Canada, South Africa as well as all over Europe. Which far flung places can we catch Lisa Lashes in 2011?

By the looks of the diary 2011 is going to be even more hectic as my USA visa has now been approved so I will be over there a lot this year as it’s a new scene for me to break into, also Canada, Australia and debut tours of India and South America as well. I also have a few dates already in the diary for some big events around Europe including Holland, Germany and Poland. On top of this I have to keep my presence in the U.K as well so it’s going to be a very busy year!

Thanks Lisa and good luck for the rest of 2011.

The trance scene will never accept you because we all know you've just jumped on a bandwagon to keep your ailing career alive rather than for genuine love of the music.
If trance was your true passion, you'd have played it from the start.
What you gonna embrace next if that genre becomes unpopular? House?

Besides, i've heard your trance sets, and they are woeful.

Do yourself and the world a favour and retire
