Xerox Eruption Area

Reported by Andy Force / Submitted 29-03-10 20:20

As Party Proactive edges closer to celebrating the 6th year of its own spectacular brand of vibrant, colourful and eclectic parties we can almost taste the mayhem on the tip of our tongue!! As has always been the way, PP serves to bring its faithful family nothing short of legendary artists representing a spectrum of sound across a breadth of genres, and topping the bill this time we have a hero of the Israeli psychedelic trance scene: Xerox.

Signed to the massive HOMmega Records as part of the deadly duo Xerox and Illumination, as well as heading up his very own Noya Records, Moshe Keinan has affirmed himself alongside other super players in the trance scene such as a skilled artist and a consistent performer and he’ll be arriving in London on the Bank Holiday Sunday 4th of April ready to show us the fiercer side of Israeli psy trance! We just had to catch up with Moshe to get to know a bit more about the man behind this awesome music.

You have an impressive discography, with releases dating back to 1997, where did you start getting into music, and what was your first experience of trance?

I was getting into the music production professionally back in '97. As a veteran DJ and owner of two clubs I was familiar with both sides of the industry, I remember Dance & Levies '97 festival with Faithless, Paul Oakenfold, Astral Projection and many more legends, it was the first time I got to listen to my own track being played outdoors! The party reaction was amazing - a kind of magic. Just to see the people's reaction and vibes, and to feel it "live”. It all came together on that night, understanding the style of music, and the massive impact of it.100% pure psy trance and energy - to me it was a huge and fresh experience.

Who were your earliest musical influences?

My influences are based on funky disco and dark 80's which I use to play a lot in my clubs. In the psy trance field are Etnica, Transwave, Juno Reactor and DJs such as Eyal Yankovich and ZooB and Tal (famous Israeli DJs) which I loved. I consider myself as an artist and a musician, a producer, music maker and also a collaborator with other friends and musicians.

You’re very well known for being part of a duo that includes a long standing partner Illumination (Amir Dvir) Although for your set at Party Proactive you’ll be going it solo, how did you guys meet and start that project together? And how do your sounds differ from one another?

I got to meet Amir Dvir (aka Luminus back then) in 2002 while I was working on my Frequency Drive album. For that album we produced our first track together called In & Out. The track was a big hit, in my opinion it felt right and musically spot on, so we decided to collaborate and start our own project called Xerox & Illumination (XI). Our unique sound was built and designed by me and Amir who holds a rich background as a sound engineer and is a talented musician who worked at major Israeli studios including mixing a few mainstream albums; he is a good friend and partner.

Some of your most recent work included the awesome compilation ‘Eruption’ on Noya, and your joint album ‘The Beast Within’ on HOMmega When can we expect some more releases from you, are there any other projects on the horizon?

'Eruption' was the first release from my own label Noya Records. These days I'm at the studio most of the time closing sessions and mixing my Magnetica debut album! This project is my latest production for Noya records. I have mixed electro with old school psy trance elements topped with oriental melodies, a true epic album. Eruption 2 will also be released later this year as well as new XI EP which will be out for the summer time on HOMmega.

What sort of music/artists do you like to listen to when you’re at home in your living room?

I'm listen mostly to radio and TV music channels, keeping updated with pop, rock and dance. I am trying to explore the new approach of modern music and mix it into our style of trance.

You’ve travelled the world with your music and been signed to a massive psytrance label, what is the next goal that you want to accomplish?

Currently, I invest my time into the young artists that I have signed to my label Noya. I try to give them my point of view of trance music and production and the main ideas for atmosphere and electronic music culture, after all these guys are the future of our scene.

What is the craziest, funniest or most exciting story that you have from travelling the world?

During my entire career I have been in lots of crazy, funny and happy moments, one of the best is the "Give Trance a Chance" demonstration rave in Rabin Square in the heart of Tel-Aviv. An apocalyptic trance gathering with over 60,000 dancers who came to take part in it! Just to be there, not to mention playing on this huge stage, really felt like a victory. We beat the institution and had our say. These actions brought many years of parties and pushed this scene out of Israel into the world.

Israel has established itself as one of the beacons of psytrance music on the world scene along with places like Brazil and South Africa, what is it do you think that makes it so popular there?

I think it's the understanding and the open minded people, who accept the new directions of music interpretation. This massive underground movement developed back at the 80s and into the 90's. After the "Gulf War" our local population needed to relax and free their minds (the same as in Brazil & South Africa and even Mexico). When you think of that, it's logical - the everyday survival struggle leads you to look for "a little piece of heaven" which you can find in the trance / psy / goa vibes. Just for few hours you are united with your tribe and can escape to happiness and true music. The Israeli full on is a blend of sounds fused into a never-ending happiness. This style hooked so many people during the years and gave them a choice of freedom and new way of lifestyle as a huge movement. It was just a matter of time before it exploded.

If you could put on a party, with any line up of artists from past or present, who would you choose and where would it be?

Oh, for that one I need to rent an island, 30 days of endless party! I’d build a lineup of old school artists because those guys are the real thing. The original energy and the vibes of the old days got kind of lost in the last few years. The new generation is not coming from our point of view. Dragonfly, Matsuri (Tsuyoshi Suzuki), Flying Rhino, TIP World and Transient were the great English psy trance sounds, good old ones which I like most. From Israel: MFG, Astral Projection, Oforia, Sub6, Astrix and the early years of Infected Mushroom. My French connection would be Transwave and Talamasca. I feel that all of the above are more than just music. Each one of us brings something personal into it, like a molecule of the atom. Together we are one giant united form of tribe.

On April 4th You’re headlining the renowned Party Proactive along with a diverse line up of artists from techno, hard house and psy trance, for people who are not familiar with your music, what can they expect on the night?

I bring pumping music, psychedelic drives - energetic and melodic yet not so usual trance tunes. Each track is carefully picked and I try to diversify as much as possible going back and forth with tracks from several of my albums and several of my new signed artists.
