Strike Gold with Lisa Pin Up

Reported by Danny Lee / Submitted 30-06-09 10:06

As one of the most recognisable names (and indeed faces) in hard dance today, Lisa Pin Up, is known the world over for her tasty sets filled with top notch track selections. One of the Tidy Girls, her career has gone on to legendary status – no wonder she’s been asked to mix a classics album!

It’s always polite to start with a hello and how are you? So, Hi Lisa and how are you doing today? What are you up to for the coming day and is the weather treating you right?

I have been having a lovely summer so far loads of wonderful gigs and a couple of holidays to Tenerife and Ibiza. I’ve had a great time but caned it a bit too much - my poor body what I put it through!

This interview coincides with Tidy’s new album release – Tidy Gold – how did that come about and why have you and Kym Ayres been chosen to put one part of the release together?

Well it’s a DJ’s dream to have been chosen to mix a classic Tidy album so I was really excited when it came along; the only problem being I had to pick just nine tracks which was really hard seeing how many amazing tunes have been on the label. I think me and Kym were asked to do this project as we are both Tidy Girls, of course a big brand on the label. I have worked closely with Tidy for years now – ever since the first Tidy girls EP way back in 1999. Then Kym and I were part of the new Tidy Girls EP released last year, keeping the Tidy girls alive and kicking!

Tidy’s back catalogue is littered with classics. The tunes hold a lot of memories for a lot of people, including yourself, I’m sure (more on that later...). What was your input to the selection and what are YOUR favourites?

There were some tunes requested by Tidy for the mix as it would not seem right without them – The Dawn and Heavens Cry. The rest of that selection are all tunes that have featured in my sets over the years. It’s hard to say which is my favourite as they have all rocked the dancefloor at some point in my career – even going back to my resident days at Freedom – Bagleys, where I loved to play Coming On Strong as the last tune of the night at 7am.

Do you feel there are enough new faces, new productions and new nights coming through? Are you still as passionate about the music as you’ve always been? And what would you say to people who thought that the big headlining acts are just cashing in while they still can?

Well I can only speak for myself and I am definitely not cashing in! I am so thankful to still be apart of this scene and I don’t think clubbers are silly, if they don’t think you can kick it as a DJ they don’t want to spend their cash on coming to see you. I am actually having the time of my life at the moment. I earned my place on circuit with all the hard work over the years and now I’m just having one hell of a party. I think it shows when I am spinning how much fun I am having. There are always new faces, productions and nights coming through, I have seen so many over the years and sure there will be loads more to come!

Lisa Pin Up has been headlining our events all over the country and further for many years now. But what about the real Lisa? What have you kept yourself busy with in your spare time? Do you work outside of music and performing and do you have any other hobbies?

The only time I have off is on a Sunday but then most of the day is sleeping from getting home the early hours of the morning after DJing. I don’t have management behind me as I am a bit of a control freak and to tell the truth love doing it myself. All week I take care of my press, spending hours a day chatting to all the lovely clubbers on social networking sites, updating all my forums and web sites and organising my tours (there’s a brand new tour coming soon, watch this space it’s gonna be so much fun!) So I don’t have time for hobbies, but I don’t want them. I am so wrapped up and love what I do I must be a bit boring to someone that does not go out clubbing as that’s all I know.

To those that may not know. Where does the Pin Up part of your name come from?

My first big break was at a club in London called Pushca back in 1995/1996. I was working as a model at the time but kept it a secret from the promoter as wanted to keep the two professions separate. I had done a couple of gigs for the club under the name of Lisa Jane but you know how club gossip goes around and the promoter soon found out about my main job and called me Lisa Pin-Up without my permission! They put it out on radio advertisement and flyers and no-one seemed to bat an eyelid. As I didn’t really like Lisa Jane my new name kind of stuck!

Lisa Pin-up’s sets are a winner every time and you never fail to impress! But what are you working on to help with the future of the sound and the scene? And why would you appeal to anyone new getting into clubbing, Tidy & hard house?

Why thank you, that is so kind of you! I think my appeal to new clubbers is my enthusiasm, I just love to party and my job is to make sure everyone else has a good time too! It has to be a natural thing and I play from my heart, I don’t really think about helping with a future sound, I think if you take care of what is happening now and make sure a club is rocking, then the scene will take care of itself. Most clubbers only do it for a few years then hang up their raving boots and a new lot of clubbers come along, that is why I think Tidy is so fabulous as it continues to bring new clubbers into the scene as well as continuing keep generations of older clubbers happy too.

You stand out as a DJ, not only for talent but for your attitude towards music, the clubbers and the scene. Your dedication to the clubbers is second to none and you are renowned for being the “down to earth” DJ, taking time out to talk to people, before and after gigs and keeping friends on the message boards. But tell us all three things that we all may not know about you.

What really gets on your nerves?: Rude people mainly but also clubbers that have fallen out of love with the scene but still go and moan about it, if you don’t like it no more don’t go, leave it for the new generation of clubbers that have a passion for the scene, I only like happy fluffy party thoughts thank you!

What breaks your heart?: A lot of the clubbers that have contacted me through the message boards have now become my friends. Sometimes when they have problems in their life they contact me to chat about it, it’s so sad to hear. I hate it when I know lovely people are suffering, it does break my heart.

And what makes your heart smile?: When you put that tune on and have a pure rush of adrenaline and pleasure. I think I was definitely put on this planet to do what I do, I am so lucky!

Over the years you’ve released various tracks on the likes of Nukleuz, Tidy and Rock Hard, to name but a few. Do you have any recent plans for releases and if so who do you work with or plan to work with on your production?

I’ve had a little break from producing but I am back now and have just finished a remix for Tidy of one of my favourite tunes Do It Now by The Brain Bashers. When I first caned this tune I never dreamed I would someday remix it so I am really happy about this project. I am always the most critical about my own tunes but I can honestly say this is going down a storm - one of the highlights of my sets at the moment! I want to get back in the studio soon and have been chatting to Tidy about some ideas. I just need to find the time now as I’ve got so many projects on.

Thank-you very much for taking the time to answer the questions, to finish off tell us your most memorable Tidy gig/event and something you got up to that maybe you shouldn’t have! And what’s on the calendar (no not the nude one) for July and August and the rest of 2009?

Most memorable would have to the last Tidy at Magna, I actually thought I had died and gone to heaven the feeling I got in front of thousands of Tidy clubbers it was just the best ever!

I think everyone has got up to something naughty at a Tidy weekender; I stayed up for two days and got in such a mess that I kept crashing loads of chalet parties. Then I got a bunch of clubbers who I never met before and made them go down the beach with me even though it was freezing, I was really trashed but wanted to see the sea (bless!) I still get people contacting me on the message boards saying, hey you might not remember me but I was with you on the beach with you at the weekender!

And to find out what I am up to in July and August go to www.lisapin-up.com!
