Defining dance music with Jon Rundell: Part two

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 06-04-09 17:26

Presenting part 2 of our interview with Jon Rundell, where we talk techno, the Miami Music Conference and whether Hilary Clinton is stalking him on Facebook, as well as get the low-down on his forthcoming UK tour with Carl Cox....

You worked at Amato Distribution for several years, ran Intec Records and started you own label, Retec, as well as being involved in setting up download site trackitdown.net, which is now doing incredibly well. Obviously you’ve seen the negative side the changes in technology have had on the music industry as well as the positive. Where can you see music production and distribution going in the future?

Digital delivery is already there, it’s the way we buy and receive music now. Personally for music production it’s good and bad. You can get your music to more countries now as it’s more affordable for people to be able to buy it. The downside is obviously the illegal sharing but it’s no different to the rave tape packs that used to go around, there is not much anyone can do to stop it.

I think that in the future things will change again for DJ’ing as the white macs at Apple come up with the next piece of technology that will once again change everything. We are already halfway there with having your phone as your pocket multimedia and once the technology is in place to carry tonnes of music and video in good quality on them then I think you might start to see DJs turning up and just plugging them in to whichever software they are using to play and basically using them as a hard drive.

In production and creation of tracks it all comes down to how much the software can create the live feel to things without losing the soul of it.

What’s your opinion on the illegal downloading of music? Given that so many teenagers doing it have no concept of copyright, would you ever follow the road of bands like Infected Mushroom who say they give their music to their fans to promote their live gigs?

Yes I agree with this ethos, it’s how I pretty much already exist. I give my music to a label and rarely expect to pay the rent by it. But it makes people aware you are there and if you pick up some gigs along the way then the rent can be paid.

You only have to look at people like Prince, giving his album away on the front of a Sunday newspaper, yet selling out all those days in a row at the O2 to see how passionate he still is to want to perform. Or the fact that people like Madonna have left their record deals to sign touring and merchandising deals instead.

I also feel that illegal downloading is something that was also created by the music industry not reacting quickly enough to the next generation’s needs and not just the kids themselves creating it. Obviously I don’t agree with it though as it affects peoples livelihoods across the whole spectrum of the industry.

What other techno labels do you rate at the moment?

Sci-tec has been amazing, every release is a must have release and always exceptionally produced. I play a lot of unsigned music too as there are some great new younger producers out there that aren’t always getting the breaks some of their music deserves as a result of labels being more cautious on what they sign these days.

How’s the techno scene in London at the moment? And internationally?

There is still an underground scene but like any scene it has slowed down a little, Split was a great party I used to go but now for the styles I’m into there is only really Closer, so I hope they keep going.

Internationally it’s the biggest scene going in my opinion. Everybody loves techno in Europe and South America, and in the other countries I visit they respond well to the slower forms of it.”

Your monthly radio show ‘Dirty Disco’ has now been syndicated all over the world. Do you find it hard to choose what tracks to include with such a diverse audience?

I find it hard to work out what to leave out really, I do bear in mind that the show needs to be slightly easier on the ear’s to listen to while your either at work, getting ready to go out, driving or generally moving around but I tend to structure it in the same I would a club set and start lower and then finish a bit higher so that’s its not all in your face to begin with and your gradually taken up.

Do you still find time to work on your D&B side-project? Will there be any D&B tracks on your album?

For sure, I have plenty of ideas kicking around, but I want to get the production level on them really nailed before Ill have the confidence to give them to the guys involved in this scene. First impressions count.

You’re about to head off on another tour of the States, which will include a couple of sets at the infamous WMC. Given the fact that the Internet and associated technology has made the world a much smaller place, do you still reckon there’s a place for events like the WMC on the music calendar?

It does get more difficult each year for people to go as it’s not a cheap week and the internet could end up playing a vital role for people to experience live feeds from clubs into their homes, there is already a website around that does this. For me it’s all about meeting people I don’t get to see all year and putting my mixes and productions in their hands. I got a lot out of it last year from doing this and with so many people from America attending it’s a necessity for me to go. Plus I get to go to some cool nights and hear some really cool DJs play and get some inspiration also.

As a seasoned WMC veteran, what’s your most rock’n’roll memory from events over the years? Are you worried that Hilary Clinton might be monitoring your FB page?

Haha, no. I’d be made up if she left a comment though, maybe she secretly likes a bit of dance music and is just using this as an excuse so she can browse on her designated workstation during her lunch break.

I’ve seen some sites at WMC that’s for sure, but in terms of rock n roll moments I’m afraid I’m not an excessive type of person and too respectful to my peers to get myself into any situations.

You’ve got a couple of new releases hot off the press to showcase on your tour: ‘Don’t Lose Your Head’ (Baroque) and ‘Mind Games’ (Teggno). Bet you can’t wait to play them at WMC?! Do you have any other productions in the pipelines you’d like to plug?

Well, I’ve got this track called ‘Damager’ I made last summer. And I’d never ever made a track before and then rang Carl up and gone “Check this out I think it’ll blow up you have to play it at Space tonight and let me know how it goes down.” And luckily it did or I’d of looked slightly silly. I’ve never been one to be too over confident but at that point in time I just really really believed in it. I’m more of a realist and tend to just let the music and DJ’ing do the talking. Watch this space on where that track will be released in the summer though.

Over the next month you’ll be playing in Montreal, Calgary, San Diego, Los Angeles, Atlanta and of course WMC. How do you adapt your set — if at all—to such different places and events?

You can’t go anywhere with a pre-planned set as if people aren’t enjoying it you’re a bit stuck. I go into every gig with an open mind and I’ll ease a few mellower tracks in before trying a few different roads to go down. Once I see what they respond to best I’ll stick with this for a while then throw a few curveballs in to slowly introduce them to newer sounds. You have to be adaptable to every gig you play but also still stand for what you represent. Luckily I can still show them what I stand for no matter what time of the night I play, it’s not having to be compromising if you love all types of music.

Do you have any non-musical pursuits planned at all for your time on the road? Or is it all about the DJ’ing?

I read books sometimes, mainly autobiographies as I find people’s lives and real events fascinating. The rest of the time I’m putting down ideas for tracks, or people watching, or trying to catch up on all the football results.

After your one-month tour of the States you’re back in London to warm up for Coxy at Koko on 9 April — a month today in fact! Given that you played some of your first big sets there when it used to be Camden Palace, this must feel like something of a homecoming. Are you looking forward to being back at the Palace? What can your fans expect from your set?

Yeah the Palace holds some good memories. I’ve been since it’s been Koko and its looks good with a lick of paint. As to what people can expect, well it’ll defiantly be groovy and I’ll be concentrating on making sure people are enjoying it, as ultimately I won’t be planning anything I play until I’m there, and I’ll be thinking a few records ahead each time.

The Koko gig is just the beginning of a national tour, which will see you warming up for Cox at The Arches in Glasgow on 12 April, Bournemouth’s Opera House on 17, Manchester’s Sankey’s on 24 and Godskitchen at Air Birmingham on 25 April. You then take some time out to play at the Global Underground special in Bratislava on 30 April and Macedonia on 1 and 2 of May before joining Carl in Cardiff for the last date of his UK tour at Liquid. That’s quite a schedule! It must be one hell of an honour to be involved in Carl’s first UK tour in over a decade! How are you going to help him make up for lost time?

I might buy him a few welcome home beers with my wages. I’m obviously really chuffed to be involved in something like this and I’ll basically be repaying his faith in me by concentrating on doing a good job for him and not letting him down. We are both very committed to what we are doing and being back in the UK makes it all the more special for both of us for various reasons. I can’t wait if I’m honest, as to do a tour like this in the UK is something I’ve always wanted to experience.

CARL COX 24/7
EASTER THURSDAY 9TH APRIL 2009
KOKO / LONDON

Featuring:
CARL COX (1st UK set of 2009)
Plus very Special Guests to be announced

If the Great Wonders of the World were extended out to DJs, then clubland giant CARL COX would most definitely be the first name in the hat. No other DJ comes close to the achievements made by Carl throughout his illustrious career spanning more than 20 years. From his early days as a mobile DJ, through to his pioneering role in the rave and acid house era, via his undisputed ‘King of Clubs’ moniker in Ibiza, his legendary Carl Cox & Friends parties and EVERY major club and festival played and smashed across the globe... Carl Cox is every bit the walking, talking superstar DJ of modern day clubland, still in massive demand across the world. It’s fitting then, for Carl to return to his homeland with a massive UK tour and to kick things off, 9th April will be Carl’s 1st UK Set of 2009 and his only London date this side of summer. Set to take place at London’s KOKO, the date (and following UK tour) will co-inside with the release of ‘Carl Cox 24/7’ – his forthcoming DVD and we should see another clubbing roadblock!

Brought to life by Lock N Load Events and Safehouse Management, the all important date is Easter Thursday 9th April - which conveniently means no work the next day for most of us! Last year Lock N Load Events & Safehouse Management hosted two sell-out Carl Cox & Friends events at Heaven, plus Carl headlined Lock N Load’s summer festival South West Four for the second time, where he played the final set in front of 20,000 sun-drenched clubbers!

‘24/7’ is the name of Carls forthcoming DVD, which is due for release in spring 2009 worldwide. The DVD is an exclusive documentary covering the everyday life of the man himself. Never before has anyone been granted this kind of access into Carl’s life outside of DJing. With over 1 hour 20 minutes of exclusive interviews and footage, and an additional 45 minutes of bonus live footage from Carl’s set on the opening night of matter in London, this DVD affords a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the inner working of one of today’s biggest DJ stars. Keep an eye out for further news regarding this release.
