It’s Krunch time!

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 02-02-08 13:34

Krunch. For some reason the name reminds me of a breakfast cereal ad, not full-on psy trance. But upon meeting Krunch’s Omer Kadosh aka Rizo for a beer and playing some of his awesome productions, it becomes very apparent that this dark-tinged driving dance music is probably best advised for night-time consumption. High octane tunes like ‘Syncopat’ have been included on the 2007 DJmag ‘Astrix & Friends’ CD and the forthcoming MOS ‘Psy Trance Euphoria’ triple CD compilation put together by John ‘00’ Fleming, as well as a number of other international comps. With the imminent release of their first album ‘Booster’ on HOMmega Productions, it looks like 2008 is going to be the year when Krunch finally hits the big time.

Renowned in the psy scene for their superb production quality and high energy tracks that lean well away from the fluff and take things to the dark side, their sound is distinctive and edgy. It’s not surprising that Rizo’s musical background is in the dark metal scene, or that he’s cut his DJing teeth playing the London squat scene for a few years. Having lived in London for well on five years, Rizo is now happy to be living back in Israel full time, where he can concentrate solely on his music. Returning to London for a rare set at tonight’s We Love Astrix 001 at Turnmills, he’ll be DJing straight after the main man himself — and as this interview illustrates, he’s one of the few around qualified for the task…

Who are Krunch? For those that don’t know you, please tell us a bit about your background. Have you always been musical?

Krunch are Omer Kadosh aka Rizo and Zeev Diukman. Both of us are from Israel and have been into music since we remember ourselves! First it was heavy metal and rock: I’ve played the guitar since I was 13, then it was on and off after I got exposed to electronic music when I was 17. Around this time trance music really started to kick off in Israel… then I went for the first time to a trance party and realised that it was actually not bad at all! I had loads of fun exploring new sounds…

Zeev used to have a band called the Dark Entity — we were all very dark at that time! He went to Erez to re-edit a track he’d been making. So it all started ten years ago when we met at the Infected Mushroom studios.

Since then we have been through a lot. In ’97 we established a band named Dark Soho so we’ve been writing music for a while. We’ve released three albums on different labels touring the world, travelling everywhere and lived in London for a few years. In Spring 2006 while I was visiting Israel, I had the option to make a track with Krunch, who had already existed for a year and since then it has continued til today!

Why the name Krunch?

Good question! Krunch mean like the big krunch — krunch time! After a few years into music you’re trying to do something new with no limits, something Krunchie!

Please describe you music. What is the Krunch sound?

Well it’s a bit of everything, but we always bear in mind to keep it pumpy, groovy, and energetic at the same time, because we like to party ourselves.

What got you into psy trance?

The first album by Astral Projection and MFG, and X-Dream, who were the pioneers at the time in 96–97. Since then we’ve followed a new direction and grew up with the music…

Who were your main musical influences growing up? And now? What was the first record you bought?

Metallica’s ‘Justice for All’. I was young and naïve! Now I would replace the name with ‘Psy Trance for All but No Justice!’ But now even that I’m playing and writing electronic music, I love all kinds of music: samba, jazz and reggae — I love reggae! Anything that makes me happy!

HOMmega heavyweight Eyal Yankovich said in the August ’07 issue of DJmag that: “When I signed Dali I said she was the last one. The came Krunch…” How did you first meet Eyal and get involved with HOMmega?

We’ve known Eyal since we were 17. He used to be there at every party we went to and he’s still here at every party we go! After we’d been living in London for a few years then moved back to Israel, we worked very hard to get the Krunch sound, but we knew always that there is only one guy that can guide us in the best way and take care of us — honestly!

Eyal and Astrix have been singing your praises for a while now, with Astrix saying on an interview on here last year that you’re “reinventing a certain flavour that was missing for too long from modern psy trance.” What do you reckon this flavour might be?

When trance music first started you needed all the equipment — it was a pain in the arse! One cable which is wrong can destroy everything! But this made you a more experienced and tougher musician to make music, you had to survive.

To survive these days, it is easier to make music, but there is a price for it. You can keep it simple… but don’t keep it too simple. As an artist you have to endeavour to make your own style, more than any time before. We bless the software of the computer today because it’s really good, but we are thankful for what we had to go through also…

What we always want to keep our music to sound like is…

M—U—S—I—C!

What does the ‘psy’ in psy trance mean to you?

Psy has been there since we started, and it still exists a bit today. People are changing, times are changing, even the police and governments are changing. They realise it’s not underground any more and it’s something listenable.

It says on the HOMmega website that you’re moto is “all about creating music [and] . . . the never ending search for new sounds and ideas.” Where do you get you new sounds and ideas from?

When you make music you are locked in the studio for a long time and everybody thinks it’s an easy job with long breaks, but it isn’t really. We do have small breaks just to breathe… between the tracks we take a week break and go outdoors, go out and meet friends, until it comes to the point when you say to yourself: “Fuck I need a computer and a studio now! I have this idea…”

How’s work going on your first album?

Well we’re about to finish it! It should be out in the next few months, hopefully two. I can’t lie, it was the hardest year of my life! I now have one grey hair and hope it will be my last.

The album title is ‘Booster’ and we’ll fit in as much music as the CD allows us. The track we’re listening to at the moment [‘Pura Vida’/‘Pure Life’] was made in August, 2007 while we’d been in the studio under a rocket attack in the middle of the war. We had to stop and come back to the studio but it was so fun because of the contrast between that reality and creating a good reality. I wish music could be the language between the two countries, then I guess it wouldn’t all be such a problem…

Your sound has been described as “full on music but minus the cheese and with some dark elements that make[you] feel that they are the ones who will find the balance between full on and dark trance together in one formula.” How do you combine the usual happy fluffiness of psy trance with the darker side?

I guess it’s like cooking! It’s a gentle mix of the herbs and spices. The food or the track should contain a bit of each in the right amount… but also all the people who are going to eat the food should be happy about it.

You’re currently considered one of the top psy-trance producers around at the moment. What’s your secret?

I guess it’s better not to have known that until now!

Are we going to hear any side projects from you in the future?

Definitely! We’re open minded to all kinds of music but we wanted to finish a grown up album that we’re going to be happy with, so it’s taken a bit longer than usual. For sure we’d like to do some live sessions — jamming!

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

To play on the same stage as respectable artists as Infected Mushroom and Astrix, to be signed to a good label and to understand that if you want to make a living out of music you have to work your arse off!

What are your goals for the next few years?

So long as we have the mood to make the music then we believe everything is going to be OK. Just be positive about life, then the rest will follow.

What artists would you like to see breaking through in 2008?

I’m happy to see Astrix climb up the ladder in the DJmag poll, because his success is HOMmega’s success. I think there are many many talented artists there, including Psy Craft, Pixel, X-Noize, Sub6 and of course Chakra.

And are there any artists you’d like to work with in the future?

We’ve been working with Guy Salama and it was a pleasure and I’m sure it will happen again in the future. And with Astrix, I’m sure we could write a ripper!

So are you excited about playing at Turnmills this Saturday?

Well I was ill for a week now and I still couldn’t stop myself to go and check out Turnmills and as I remembered it was packed, massive and crazy. And I can’t wait to see a proper psy trance line-up on that sound system! It will be a blast! See you on the dancefloor!
