Getting to know Tommie Quick ahead of his Tidy Weekender debut

In today’s changing clubbing climate it’s fair to say just an A-list all star DJ line-up doesn’t always cut it. With the same old names appearing time and time again it’s the turn of the local heroes to emerge and add what some may see as the missing spark for their night out. Whilst some local names come and go, some stand firm to become a stalwart of their local scene. With the South West and hard dance, there’s one name that keeps cropping up these days: Tommie Quick.
Known for his friendly personality and presence both behind and in front of the DJ booth, his growing fan base is also due to his energetic dance floor friendly sound that just keeps winning fans of all ages across the board. I caught up with Tranzaction Resident Tommie for a chat ahead of his Tidy Weekender Debut this October to try to find out what makes him tick.
You play everything from warm up sets to closing the night, and appear with hard dance’s biggest names. For those that may not be familiar with your name, how would you sum up your musical style?
Oooh that’s always been a tough one to answer because I am very musically open minded. Outside of the club I listen to many different styles and genres, but when I’m DJing you can catch me playing anything from tough house and electro through to trance, techno, hard dance and anything else in between. Music for me falls into two categories — good and bad — and if it’s good, uplifting and energetic, I’m there.
You’ve been associated with Tranzaction for some time; how do you feel about Tranzaction’s rise to become the leading light in the South West?
Tranzaction has always been on the forefront of dance music in the South West and it just keeps getting better. The Tranzaction brand is one that clubbers know and trust when it comes to a weekend workout. They know that whatever happens it’s going to be a good night and that’s what it’s all about.
Before playing my first ever set in the back room many years ago I used to attend Tranzaction parties as a clubber and I was hooked from the start. Tranzaction is all about the party, it’s about good music and happy people. There’s nothing pretentious; it’s all about having a good time.
Aside from DJing I’ve noticed a lot of your time is becoming focused on the production side of things. Your Digital Deviant guise has gained some Radio 1 plays already. What else is in the pipeline and what drives you currently musically in production?
Yeah I’m becoming a lot more focused on production as time goes on. The Digital Deviant idea was spawned some time ago when I decided I wanted to add my own unique touch to some of the latest tracks, club classics and forgotten gems. Most Digital Deviant tracks add a touch of surprise to the familiar and really hit home when they kick — you’ve got to have a bit of fun with the crowd when you play. Judge Jules is a big supporter of my Digital Deviant stuff, with four tracks racking up over fifteen plays on Radio 1 and also acquiring Jules’ coveted “Tried and Tested” status.
Aside from that, my remix of BK’s classic ‘Revolution’ has been doing the rounds with BK dubbing it one of the best remixes to date, which as you can imagine coming from the man himself was a real defining moment for me.
I’ve also got a couple of new tracks in the pipeline, one of which is a dirty slice of tough electro trance with the catchiest hook you’ll hear this side of Christmas, or just after if I don’t get it finished in time lol!
What do you prefer to play: massive events, festivals, or smaller more intimate venues?
I don’t think I can really give a specific answer to that as each has their own set of merits and drawbacks. Although massive events and festivals can be amazing, sometimes breathtaking, they can often lack the ferocity and intensity of a smaller venue that’s really going off. I don’t think size really matters when it comes to the atmosphere at an event, it’s all about the location, music and more importantly, about the people! That’s right lads — you heard me right, size doesn’t matter!
That said, one of the strangest places I’ve played, which is neither a festival or an event, would for radio on Malibu FM in Newquay. It’s very odd to be playing to thousands of people but only having your engineer and a security guard for encouragement, neither of which compare to a crowd of up-for-it revellers. What was more entertaining was the fact that the studio was based in a portacabin outside one on Newquay’s busiest clubs. My show, which I co-presented with a friend, ran from midnight until 6am on Saturday morning so at 2am (club kickout time back then) the studio would be surrounded by a barrage of drunken clubbers — it was like a scene from Dawn Of The Dead. Needless to say the random interviews I did at that time were fun!
Is there anything you think needs to change in the scene?
That’s an interesting question. I think, like with everything in life, there is always room for improvement, growth and expansion. You hear regular stories about “dance music being dead” but you only have to head to a Tranzaction party to know that that is complete and utter b*****ks. Every scene follows a natural cycle and will expand and decline, but there are too many passionate people out there, myself included, that will prevent dance music from dying a death. My only real criticism of the scene as it stands is that more events need to focus less on trying to be upfront and trendy and more on showing people a good time and putting on a party.
Who’s the funniest person in hard dance you’ve meet or worked with so far? Any stories?
Haha, I’ve met many characters over the past few years. Of those that stick out I would say Avaline (Chris Tranzaction) has on many occasions had me close to tears with his sharp dry-whitted sense of humour. When it comes to getting themselves into trouble Charlie G always entertains me with his morning-after stories. As for telling those stories I’m sorry, what happens at the afterparty, STAYS at the afterparty…
With quite an open mind musically, what’s the one tune in your collection that you don’t want anyone to know about?
Ah, it is at this point I need to make the decision as to how much of my sordid past I reveal. I’ve been DJing since I was 11 years old and started off playing at kids’ parties where, although I was into it, dance music wasn’t the flavour of the month. Lets just say I may have classics like Shaggy — ‘Oh Carolina’ and the odd East 17 record kicking around. Rumour has it that there may be a Power Ranger’s single, but I’d like to see someone prove that!
It would be wrong not to mention your four-year residency at Plymouth’s legendary Dance Academy. Do you feel this was your big break and if you could, would you do it all again?
My residency at the Dance Academy was definitely a catalyst and a major factor in getting me where I am today. Over those four years I have met some great friends and experienced what I truly believe to be some of the best parties in the UK. Tom Costelloe gave me my first set at the Dance Academy and has supported me ever since. I think no matter how hard you work it is important to have people behind you to keep up the momentum and give you a nudge in the right direction and, for me, Tom Costelloe and Chris Tranzaction have been, and continue to be, absolute legends. Thanks guys!
You’re firmly established in the South West, do you have any plans for the rest of the UK? What has the rest of 2007 got in store for you?
Yeah for sure, next weekend I’m heading to Prestatyn to play at the Tidy Weekender in the Tranzaction arena — needless to say I’m really excited about that. The Weekender aside, some of my upcoming gigs include sets in Ireland, Sundissential’s 11th birthday and many more. Watch this space….

What can I say, I can’t wait! It’s a real honour to play at possibly the UK’s biggest hard dance event. Looking back at previous gigs it’s obvious that the Tidy brand always brings in a wave of energetic happy people and I can’t wait to experience first hand the intensity of such a major Tidy event.
