Valentino Kanzyani will break your Proactive heart

Reported by Joanna McEwen / Submitted 14-08-07 20:51

We at Party Proactive love Valentino Kanzyani. Partly because he has one of the coolest names in the biz, partly because he looks like a rock god with eyes flashing sex appeal concealed behind his ubiquitous darkened shades but mainly, and you know this is always where we’re at, he plays the most breathtaking, energising techno you could ask for.

From Slovenia, Valentino Kanyzani has been at the forefront of the pumping techno sound rocking Europe and our Party Proactive dance floors. Founding the influential production outfit Recycled Loops alongside Umek in 1999, the popularity of their energy and groove soon led to the setting up Recycled Loops Records. Continuously releasing tracks on the imprint over the past 8 years, his tracks have also appeared on labels like Primate, Carl Cox’s Intec, 20:20, SuperBra and Primevil; while he has also created and released on a further two labels, his virtual label, Jesus Loved You and the more house orientated Earrestisble, also with Umek; and developed his more minimal and progressive style with releases on Defected, Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi Recordings and through his Rock The Discoteque mix series. With tracks including I Pray, Neuva York, Flying, Feeling Electro, Feedback and Paradox appearing on a huge amount of compilations and mix CDs from Sharam’s Global Underground to Cream Ibiza, I ♥ Techno and Eddie Halliwells, Fire it Up, Valentino’s versatility and danceability is only matched by the fervour and high regard in which is fans hold him.

By now a truly global superstar DJ, Valentino Kanzyani’s credentials are as solid in the underground dance scene as respected in the more commercial arena. Hosting an Essential Selection for Pete Tong and guest mix for Eddie Halliwell on Radio 1, playing all the major clubs and festivals across Australia, Asia, South America, Japan and Europe, now we, at Party Proactive, are very pleased to announce his forthcoming gig at our 1st September party at Turnmills.

Hello Valentino, I hope you are keeping well, I hear you’re off to Hawaii.

You must have played in some fantastic locations over the past few years. What has been your favourite or most memorable gig to date?

Its hard to pick up just one, there were so many great gigs from big festivals to smaller locations and I must say that were more or less all good, some unbelievable and very few to forget.

Your career really began to take off in 1995 when you took on a residency in one of the main clubs in Slovenia, Ambasada Gavioli. How important was it that you were able to choose and book the DJs you played with?

Very important, I have met and had the chance to spin with my heroes and to talk with them about the international scene which was at that time seemed far fetched for me. I will never forget my first meetings with John Acquaviva, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Laurant Garnier, Jeff Mills, and many more. They opened me a new window and made me start thinking of breaking into the international scene. I was just 20 years old and had a great chance to develop my career.

What had you been doing before this opportunity came along?

I started DJing in 1989, and had my first residency in 1991. Back than dance music in my country was completely unknown and I was one of the first lovers that started to promote it.. It was a hard job at the beginning but I am happy I had trust in it and saw it as the style of the future. I played various clubs in the country and put some underground parties on around my home town and of course played in the first raves in Slovenia. It was nice and very underground.

What kind of music were you playing back then?

I played everything that I liked from underground house, acid to hardcore techno. Dance music was just at its beginning and I was buying anything I liked, then step by step I developed my style and started to play techno, things like the first Plus 8 releases, Eye Q, Nova Mute, Axis, F-Com, and many more..

When did you meet Umek?

I meet him in our legendary club K4 in 1993. We played at a night called Raveland that ran on Wednesdays and from there we started to see each other more often and became friends.

How did Recycled Loops come about?

We started it at first as a label project from the club Ambasada but they didn’t really think it was strong enough and after a short time, maybe in May 1999, we quit the collaboration. We decided to continue on ourselves and send the first material to PRIME distribution. They loved it and released our first EP as Recycled Loops on Primevil Records. As it was an instant success we decided to create some more and asked PRIME if they would be interested in distributing our label and so we started Recycled Loops label in 2000.

We’re lucky enough at Party Proactive to have you play your tougher techno sound which you pushed through Recycled Loops and your newest venture, Jesus Loved You, though I do know you have begun to explore a more minimal tech house sound. What do you enjoy about the two different styles that you play?

I was always motivated by new sounds and minimal just opened a new eye on music for me, it’s just something new and fresh and turns me on. I don’t consider my self a minimal DJ but minimal just helped other styles freshen up and calm down the urge for music to be played fast. I believe that it’s the next step for me and I am concentrating on creating my own fusion. I got bored of the tribal and funky techno sounds though it took me a while to discover my new wave but now I am ready to rock dancefloors with my new style. I can’t really say its minimal, it’s a fusion of music that I stand for and play. So far I’ve played this new style for more than a year and got everyone moving from small venues of hundreds to big festivals with 25,000 people in front of me!

Jesus Loved You is run as a digital label with only the occasional print onto vinyl – presumably to test out what is worth taking the risk on before committing to the extra costs involved. As a DJ do you still use vinyl?

Not anymore, I used it until April this year then I discovered that Serato Scratch is very stable and decided to stop and move to digital. It was risky but after a while it changed a lot of things for me, I have all my tracks in my laptop and I can listen to them every where I am, and for a DJ that is always on the go that’s very important. Also buying and receiving new track is not a problem anywhere now. I can buy much more music now than ever before..

As many DJs use Ableton during their sets, do you think these could still be considered live or is the skill of producing sets, in your opinion, returning to the choice of music rather than the ability to mix?

I don’t use it because I’ve used turntables for more than 17 years now and I love being able to use the turntable, but still have the opportunity to be in a digital domain. But I am sure if you use Ableton in the right way with all the options that it offers, you can make a difference in playing music.

With Slovenia being such a small country it really is testament to your abilities and your determination to succeed that you have risen to such prominence. Who would you say in Europe, or the rest of the world for that matter, is one to watch out for in the future?

Marko Nastic is a big shot and I am sure he will explode very soon, I mean he is already considered by many but I think his real talent is still not valued as it should be.

And what would you like the future to hold for yourself?

I am very happy at this time of my life, I wish just to continue to be able to produce quality music and remain as passionate as I am now for the rest of my career.

Thanks Valentino. I hope you’re ready to party with us on the 1st September - I know people are very excited to have you play. Much love, Party Proactive x x x

Thanks you see ya soon!
