Grady G gets ready to explode at Blast!

Reported by Jazzy / Submitted 15-06-07 23:24

Grady G, a man widely known as the King of Filth, has made a huge name for himself with his fierce, high energy productions. His very first release, Afraid of the Dark, on Passion Records four years ago, took the hard house / NRG scene by storm, devouring dance floors across the globe. But that was only the beginning of his enormous success and since then labels across the board have featured his quality tuff productions, while promoters and clubbers lapped up each DJ set, comprised of only his tunes - a filthy, hard jockey-cum-rock star with a fresh and banging sound.

He grabbed the UK scene by the horns during his last few tours and is set to bring us more of his latest productions in his upcoming summer 2007 tour. I decided to catch up with the big man himself ahead of his set at Blast at Area on the 23rd of June and this is what he had to say for himself.

Hi Grady, firstly, thanks very much for taking the time out to do this interview, I know how busy you've been lately, let me just reiterate how much we are looking forward to your first London appearance!!

What inspired you to drop your band and become a club DJ?

Well I wasn’t really inspired to drop the band. The spark for it all had just slowly faded out, probably with the helping hand of being introduced to the rave / party scene; where I found a new sound I could really get into. I wasn’t expecting to become a DJ from the start, I just enjoyed producing music at home. Before I knew it, I had a track released, and thought ‘f@*k, better learn to DJ so I can promote my own music’.

What's been the most enjoyable set you’ve played?

It would have to be either Storm in Coalville, or any of the Bezerk events in Auckland, NZ.

In terms of music and crowd, what are the differences between the UK and Australian club scenes?

Not a huge difference really, some parties differ in crowd size but our population isn’t as high as yours. From what I’ve seen both the UK and Ozzy crowds like it served up pretty hard though! Both are very up for it crowds.

Which one of your productions is your favourite?

I can’t put it down to one track as my favourites to tend to change all the time. At any given time my favourite tune of the moment is usually the last finished production.

What do you enjoy most about your tours to the UK?

All the great shows I’ve had the chance to play at so far and all the wicked new people I’ve met along the way. Also all the travelling I’ve done and the sights I’ve seen.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Spending time at home relaxing, doing a spot of gardening and drinking beer with friends! Ha-ha.

When, where and what was your first DJ set?

Adelaide – the Enigma front bar to about 10 of my friends. I think it was in late 2002.

How long have you been involved with Queen of Clubs and how did that all get started?

We’ve been working together for about a year now. Kym Newman (Queen of Clubs) was touring Proteus here in Adelaide. I was lucky enough to be playing alongside him. Kym was in the crowd watching and much to my surprise she liked what she heard and saw. Before I knew it she had me on a plane to the UK for my first tour. The tour went really well and before it was over, the second tour dates had already been decided. I really didn’t expect it to happen all so quickly.

If you had to describe your music style with just three words, what would they be?

Fucking brutal nrg.

Is there anything specific that inspires your music productions, or is it more of a mix of many things?

Lots of inspiration comes from the harder side of nrg, along with grindcore and death metal. Any type of aggressive sounding music is always a big inspiration for me.

If you had the choice to collaborate with any person (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Probably the Mr Dom Sweeton. Because his sound rocks!

If you had to choose a Simpsons character that would best describe you, who would it be and why?

Barney, as I like my beer. And sometimes I crank out a big burp! Ha-ha.

Can you give us a sneak preview on your upcoming releases?

Well, I’ve got my remix of Narc’s Subhuman that’s due out on Volatile in the next few months. I have also just finished a new up-to-date 2007 remix of it too. There’s another collaboration with Kampain - The End Is Near’ from my last visit to the UK, which is due out on his label Easy Skanking. There’s also a remix of the classic tune Vacuum Packed which you can catch on Deprivation Records in the not too distant future.

What are your plans for the rest of 2007?

My calendar is filling up with two more tours to the UK and another show in NZ late in the year. There are also some interstate gigs here in Australia coming up. Other than that, I’ll be working my day job and relaxing on weekends.

Your sets comprise completely of your own material, how do you feel this makes a difference?

I like it because I can play tracks that no one has, or has ever heard before.

What is your view on back 2 back DJ sets?

Although I do the occasional B2B with my good mate Narc here in Adelaide as I always have a blast mixing with him, I’m not really into doing back to backs.

If you could have any 3 things in the world, what would they be?

A teleporter unit like in Star Trek (not that I’m a trekkie) so I don’t have to fly for 25 hours to get to your country, haha. A bottomless pit of money would be good and happiness, coz ya’ can’t buy happiness.

One of your upcoming UK sets will be at Twist in London, got any surprises in store for this event?

Yep I sure do. I’ve got some nasty new grinding nrg remixes, plus a couple new originals. I assure you, you won’t be treated lightly!
