The dirtiest strains of hard house are not quite as prevalent as they used to be in our fair capital city, but there are some people who are continuing to keep the filth alive. That dirty little stop-out Lucy Fur is still keeping the flame alight for hard hard house, and doing a damn fine job of it too. Ahead of her headline set at Juiced this Friday at Hidden, we roped her in for a catch up and to find out about her recently established electro fetish...
Lucy! How has 2006 been treating you?
2006 has been a great year on a professional and personal level. It’s gone so quick — that’s when you know you have been having fun! I’ve played at some of the best events this year, alongside having my own tunes signed, a dj tour of Brazil and also played up and down the country most weekends. I couldn’t ask for much more could I?
Have you noticed any major changes in the hard dance scene over the past year? For better or for worse?
I feel the major change for this year has to be the reduction in the big events. There always used to be something on that suited everyone’s tastes every weekend. I am not convinced that this will help the scene progress and stay strong. If you have a successful party that’s busy every month with a good vibe, why not do it monthly or bi-monthly, or even weekly if you have the time. I can’t see how this ‘kills the scene‘. If anything it must make it stronger. I am however pleased at the amount of new djs that are coming through, and that promotions are giving them a chance. After all, it’s how we all start.
Your music is generally cited as being the hardest hard house around. How do you go about structuring a set when the music is all so fierce and extreme?
I consider myself very lucky. I can play all variations of hard house across the board from bounce to the harder stuff, but my favourite is obviously the tougher, and 9/10 of my bookings will be for that sound. It’s great that the harder edge is still in demand! I do structure my sets to a certain fashion, I make sure there’s plenty of energy at the start, tease with a bit darker in the middle with some classics for good measure, and then uplift it at the end. If I have been booked for a closing set, then generally it will start energetic and end up with full blown baselines at the end. I do get booked for quite a few of these! I usually do the closing set at my residency Cyberkitten, for which they seem to really enjoy.
Have you found it easy to convert people you know to liking hard house or not?
I’m not sure you can ever really convert anyone to like something which they are really not sure about, but people certainly are willing to explore more music varieties these days which is optimistic. Most people that don’t like hard house think it all sounds like ‘bass in your face London!’
You are back down at Hidden for Juiced on November 3rd, headlining the hard room. The club is just about to turn one year old — what have been your highlights from your many visits there this year?
I am really looking forward to playing at Juiced — they have so much variety on that night! There is not a particular highlight that stands out because I really like the club and usually have a good time in there! I can’t believe it’s a year old already! There have been some excellent parties there this year, including Frantic and Summit.
You are playing there alongside a bit of a hard house legend in the form of Justin Bourne. Can you remember the first time you saw him play?
I can actually! It was when he played the back room at Turnmills for Heat when I first started dj’ing, about 5 years ago! He blew me away and I’ve been a huge fan ever since. I had been drinking that night and felt the need to tell him what I thought of his set and threw in ‘yeah I’ve just started out myself, remember my name Lucy Fur!’ He doesn’t remember me saying that now but how embarrassing! He’s also a lovely guy too, many djs have a lot to learn from him on a technical and professional level.
You’ve turned your hand to knocking out some electro beats recently. Have you enjoyed exploring a new genre for the first time in a while?
I have a confession — I’ve been playing around with it for about a year or so now, but never had the time or confidence to take it further! I really enjoy playing electro actually. The clean production sound and style of mixing is fun. Funky house I do enjoy, but not as much as electro or electro-house.
Which producers have particularly been floating your boat in this area?
I love Miles Dyson and Aaren San as separate producers. They have an excellent sound which they apply to their productions. They also guise as the Soulbrothers for their funkier stuff and it’s all really good. I have done a CD recently with a lot of their material and remixes on.
Do you think there are similarities between your electro style and your hard house style then? How so?
Definitely, and it is that both styles must be energetic and dirty! I never play a record that wouldn’t make me want to have a groove or stomp to, and I always apply that to the material I play.
What about tracks that combine elements of electro and hard dance together? Many producers seem to be mixing the two together, BK and Marcel Woods for example.
.
I am not a big crossover fan. Some pieces work but too many combinations make everything sound the same to me.
Have you come across any really talented new producers recently that you reckon we should look out for?
I haven’t recently, but I do have my firm favourites in the production scene! I get many CDs given to me out with no contact details on — they have always been really good but I can’t sing their praises now as no idea who gave them to me.
How has your production been going in fact?
My first production was signed to Hardsounds, and sales have been good. The one many people are waiting for is due out any time now on Twisted Filth called ‘Intruder Alert’ which I did with Riggsy. It is a bootleg of the Prodigy’s ‘Break and Enter’, and is a real floor filler! Lastly, the other track with Riggsy I have done is ‘Occupational Hazard’ which is currently unsigned, but watch this space!. I do plan to do more tracks in the future, but it’s likely to be 2007 now.
Outside of the major cities, which towns and areas in the UK have really kicking dance scenes that you have experienced?
Northampton is great! I love playing my monthly Cyberkitten residency up there, the venue is lovely and the atmosphere is always wicked. I also really enjoy playing in Birmingham, Nottingham and Leicester. I have a nice fan-base in the Midlands now, which is so inviting when I go up there.
Last but by no means least, we must ask, as the event is called Juiced... what is your favourite type of juice? Keep it clean please Lucy!
It’s got to be pineapple!

After a rocking debut party at Vauxhall’s gorgeous Hidden club, Juiced returns for an even bigger and better party than before! We’ll be using all 3 rooms of the club to provide you with a full-flavoured dance music experience featuring legends of the scene alongside Trouble Promotions’ hottest new talents.
Our headliner for this night of musical mayhem and mischief is the one and only Justin Bourne – one of the most revered figures in Hard House and an absolutely superb DJ. His tough, bass-driven tunes will shake the main room to its foundations, before that filthy little minx Lucy Fur steps up to deliver the hardest beats known to man! We are proud to be showcasing some of the finest “NuBreed” talent from the London scene, such as our very own Double Trouble, Andy McCall and JK. The other rooms are all about our roots – house music baby! From fruity and funky in Room 2 to dirty and electro-led in Room 3, we’ve got the lot, and those lovely guys at No Forms will be supplying the beats all night long in the third room.
The venue will be decked out with UV, balloon stalls and our awesome dancers to keep you entertained, and there’s more goodies in store in our giveaways. Plus the first 50 tickets purchased entitle the bearer to a FREE JUICED GOODIE BAG – so book early to avoid disappointment. All this and of course that unbeatable Juiced atmosphere....
