Black is white with Adam White

Dance music comes in waves and being a well recognized and successful dj certainly isn’t all about being a one hit wonder. Over the past 10 years there’s been a name that’s been as synonymous with trance as black goes with white. Adam White has seen his name rise progressively with parties, productions and compilations. But where is he at the moment? Where’s he playing? What’s he doing? I got in contact with him ahead of appearances in Ibiza to find out just where he’s at.
“Ibiza will always be Ibiza to me,” he says, when talking about how the scene has developed. “Yes it has become a lot more commercial and people say it’s not what it was, but I honestly believe Ibiza is what you make it. I love playing over there and as long as you know where ‘not’ to go, you’ll see some of the best clubs in the world and meet some of the best people you’ll ever meet.” But how relevant is it to the everyday clubber? “I think Ibiza will always be relevant to the scene but I don’t think it has the ‘Wow’ factor it used to have. I think it is something every clubber has to experience once in their lives though, more for the place and the vibe really. Mambo is possibly my favorite place on the Island and there is a lot more to Ibiza than just Space and Manumission.”
Many people link Adam White with the Euphoria albums of yesteryear. At one point he was more or less the Euphoria series. “When I first starting working for them in 2000 compiling and mixing the albums, we chose the tracks so carefully and I made sure they were mixed with the real clubbers in mind. I’m sorry to say that since Euphoria’s move to Ministry it has turned into a money machine. I still do the Euphoria radio show and there was talk of me mixing the ‘Classic Euphoria’ album but it wasn’t for me. It’s a shame as there is so much good new trance music out there but trance isn’t as big as it was and they need to sell top 5 albums hence the more commercial twist on the series.”
With his show on Ministry going weekly every Thursdays at 10pm, now on DAB radio and sky channel 0198, the ability for Adam to showcase those new tracks has increased exponentially. There’s also the little matter of being offered a monthly show on VONY.com, Paul Van Dyk’s station, on the second Friday of every month. But just how relevant is radio these days? “Everyone listens to the radio. The advantage I have on my show is I have total control over what is played. A lot of the Radio One specialist djs get hardly any say over what they can play; Pete Tong is the only DJ on Radio One with total artistic control.”
The challenge now though is which format will win out. Just like in the days of Betamax and VHS, there’s a battle of the formats happening, which will only intensify with the arrival of Wi-fi access to the internet everywhere that’s already happening in the States and the Far East and the further take up of Digital Audio Broadcasts that’s currently backed up by the BBC here. “I think DAB has been a massive move forward in radio broadcasting though it doesn’t always work and with the internet there are so many unlicensed stations now it’s hard to keep up with them all. Personally I think it’s a great way for young and up-and-coming DJs to get the opportunity to promote the music they play and produce so I guess I’ll sit on the fence for now. With sites such as ‘myspace’ I think the internet has opened the doors for so many new artists and allowed the world to check out their music.” He’d like to see a more visual element to the broadcasts though: “Having a good face for radio will be a thing of the past as soon you’ll be able to watch your favorite DJs presenting their shows in real time.” The spread of broadband will help this though as the web is able to carry higher bandwidths and more data.
Interesting, as we also talked about downloading. Anyone will tell you we are at a watershed moment. Recently legal downloads surpassed hard copy sales and the only way is up for digital as more consumers and companies embrace the internet age. “It has certainly made music a lot more accessible to people and to be able to sit at home and within 5 minutes have you favorite new album or track in your hands is awesome. You can even download albums straight to your mobile now.”
On the other hand as a producer or company it’s also harder to make sure exactly who has your music. “As soon as a track is played on the radio, some little wiz-kid has ripped it, edited it and posted on an illegal download site. It has made the industry move a lot quicker though as a lot of digital labels are now releasing their music at the same time as they promo it to minimize the loss through illegal downloads and file sharing.” Surely this can only be a good thing though, removing the inertia and streamlining bloated or insular companies?
Technology has become an important part of what Adam White does with his music. With a 100% digital studio and technology getting more and more advanced every day the only way to make sure you’re moving with the times is to embrace what’s put in front of you. It hasn’t changed how he’s plays his sets but he has a refreshing outlook on the subject: “It’s just another tool. I use 100% CD now, unless I’m playing a classics event in which case I’ll take a box of vinyl. I don’t think I’d ever use Ableton for a dj set; I’d get bored to be honest. I use it in the studio a lot but it’s not hands on enough for me really. I’d consider Sorato or Scratch as there is still the live visual element of mixing two formats together which I feel is essential when DJing.”
Using that technology back in the studio has its plus and minuses but it’s about making it work. “I’ve been really busy working on my first studio album which seems to be taking longer than I originally thought but I don’t think you can really put a time limit on something like that. I’m going to be launching my digital label soon. I’ve got some pretty interesting collaborations on the horizon too. I’ve just remixed the new DT8 single called ‘Circle of Life’ and I am about to start remixing the Headstrong single called ‘The Truth’. We’ve got a few unfinished Whiteroom projects as well to get nailed once the summers over.”
So just what might be influencing the albums and his sets in general? “Trance seems to be really turning full circle now with electro-influences creeping back in and the tech trance thing really starting to evolve again like it did the mid-90s. Music moves in stages, some people move with it, some get left behind but if you always stay true to what you play as a dj and what you write as a producer then in my opinion you can’t go wrong. I’ll just keep on doing what I’m doing and hope people keep on liking it. I think it depends a lot on where the scene goes and nobody can predict that.”
With a residency in the Ukraine starting soon, a return to Shanghai and of course Knowwhere’s 5th birthday in October with a return to Heaven, he certainly can’t be doing much wrong. But there was one last question I was interested in, just who is Adam White? I got a short, simple, but quite possibly very smart answer, “Minimoo’s boyfriend!”
