These are our rules! F*ck the Majority! Krowdkontrol with Johnny Arthur

Reported by JC Taktikal / Submitted 19-04-06 14:13

The electro and techno scenes have been rife with burgeoning European talent lately, but closer to home there’s a number of UK-reared production stars rising tall and proud. Step forward one Johnny Arthur.

At just 22 years of age, the amiable and humble DJ has already had releases snapped up by David Duriez for acclaimed French outlet Red Brique, as well as gaining widespread industry plaudits for his deep techno fuelled DJ sound. He’s played alongside everyone from Bedrock favourite Jonathon Lisle to Berlin electro mistress Ellen Alien at his enduring Chicken Knickers residency.

Johnny took some time out before his forthcoming set at Hidden’s free party KrowdKontrol to answer some of our questions…

At just 22, you’ve played after everyone from Ellen Alien to the Vector Lovers and been touted by the likes of DJMagazine as one of the scene’s brightest young things. How did you first get hooked into dance sounds as a youngster and how does it feel to have achieved so much at such a young age?

Err…. It is a bit of a shock actually — I never really expected it to come this far. Music has always been something I’ve always been pretty obsessed with and it’s just kind of snowballed lately.

Getting into dance music was a pretty natural progression for me — I’ve always liked music to have plenty of energy, ever since I started playing the drums as a kid and electronic music ticked that box in a big way.

What were your first clubbing experiences? Can you recall the first time you went clubbing?

I remember it was at Club Class — although the rest is a bit hazy.

Your residency at regular North London session Chicken Knickers describes its music policy as ‘deep filthy sleazoid acid mindfuckery for a battered generation’. Is this a decent description of what you play?

Hahahaha…. Yeah I guess it comes pretty close! The stuff I play is probably best described as deep, driving, techno.

You recently released your nagging electro-techno tweaker ‘Evil Edna’ on David Duriez’ Kill Brique. How did your production talents first come to the attention of the French label and was this your first major production release?

It’s all thanks to Mike Monday actually. He was really into the track and nearly signed it to his own label — playtime.— although in the end decided it was a bit dark for the playtime sound and gave a copy to Mr Duriez.

Edna is actually my second release – my first was a track called ‘Out of It’ which came out on Whoop! Records this time last year. I actually made the track about two years ago, so it’s quite different from the stuff I’m doing now. The guys at Whoop! decided to sign me up for a three track deal and are going to release my follow up ‘Redlight’ in the next few months.

How pleased are you with the final results and is ‘Evil Edna’ a firm signal of the musical direction that your next few releases will be going in?

I’m really pleased with the way ‘Evil Edna’ turned out… It was the first time I came away from the studio feeling that I’d properly nailed it. Having said that, Deetron’s remix of the track has really inspired me – so expect some stuff like that in the coming months.

You’ve been playing regularly at Tim Sheridan’s aptly titled weekly messer’s session, VeryVeryVeryWrongIndeed. As a clubber, are you partial to a decent session of after-party wrongness? Do people actually listen to your sets at afterparties or are they just far to munted off their chops to know what’s really going on?

Not at all — I’ve had some of my best gigs at after parties. We did one for Chicken Nickers last summer with Paul Woolford in a grotty Shoreditch basement and the crowd went mental! Personally, I have been known to stay out a bit later than I should from time to time — I blame peer pressure!

Of all the parties you haven’t played, which would you most like to infect with the Johnny Arthur sound and why?

I’d really like to play at Club Class — where it all started for me. It would be quite a cool full circle.

You’re playing at Hidden for the free party KrowdKontrol on April 22nd. Have you had your fair share of free party experiences? What is the most bizarre free party experience you’ve ever had and why?

There are actually quite a few but you probably wouldn’t believe me even if I told you….

KrowdKontrol is hoping to inject a bit of fuck-off attitude and rebellious spirit back into clubbing. Do you think clubland 2006 is lacking in attitude and what is the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done?

I think the scene is really strong at the moment — as for fuck-off attitude, I think there are quite a few people trying to do the same thing as KrowdKontrol which is making it even better. I’m really looking forward to the party!

Hmmm…. The most rebellious thing I’ve ever done… I had a slightly inappropriate relationship with one of my teachers while I was a school — does that count?

Finally, what does the rest of the year hold for Johnny Arthur?

Lots of learning! I want to start incorporating Ableton into my sets as well as doing more 3 deck mixing. I also want to learn more about the technical side of production.
