Why Justin Bourne likes to play dirty

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 12-04-06 20:55

Justin Bourne is one of London’s longest serving hard dance residents. Where the likes of Steve Thomas, Pete Wardman and Ian M were dominating the gay scene, at clubs such as Trade, Justin was tackling the straight scene. Starting out at promotions such as Fevah, Fahrenheit and Strawberry Sundaze he’s appeared at every premier gig you can think of including Frantic, tidy, Goodgreef, Heat and Storm, and has a discography topping a whopping 80 tracks!

He is also a favourite within the Vicious Circle stable and an avid fan, claiming have played every single on of their tracks. It’s therefore fitting that the Portsmouth based family man will be making his next London appearance at I Love VC on 22nd April.

You’ve been DJing for 15 years. You started out as a rave DJ, and moved on to the dirty style of hard house that you play today. Can you remember the first rave that you went to all those years ago? Is there a track that you distinctly remember?

I can’t remember the exact first rave I went to, but I used to go to a club called Sterns in Worthing all the time. I was a regular, and would go along with my older mates who’d drive up there most weekends.

I started going when I was 13 years old and got really into the scene. I used to walk around with headphones on constantly listening to mix tapes and studying mixing and buying all the tunes. This was before I bought my first pair of Technics at 15 years old and I started DJing within two months. Joey Beltram’s — ‘Energy Flash’ was a favourite of mine in the early days, and I still love it now.

You’re still a resident of Portsmouth. Is this where you grew up?

I live a ten minute drive from the city centre but have only been here for the past three years. I’ve spent most of my years in a town called Emsworth, which is about twenty minutes from Portsmouth. I was born in Cardiff, Wales but only stayed there until I was six or seven. Most of my family still live in Cardiff though.

If I was to go to Portsmouth for a weekend break where should I go; and what should I do?

The best place to go in Portsmouth is to the end of the motorway, take a hard right at the roundabout and head straight home again. You won’t regret it, haha

How is your record label, Short Circuit going at the moment?

Short Circuit has actually been on hold for the past few months. Vinyl sales have dropped so I decided to have a break, sit back and see what happens before I decide on my next step. It’s not the end of Short Circuit I’m just looking at my options.

Do you have 9–5 a daytime job? Or do you work full time as a DJ, producer?

I started back at my day job in Jan 2005 after a six year break just DJing and producing. I found that I had spare days during the week that I could of been at work earning more money for my family, so I decided to go back and have that little bit more security.

I left school early to work as a block paver during the week and DJ at the weekends. I’ve been used to juggling both jobs, so it was no problem for me to go back and I enjoy doing two totally different things, keeps it interesting for me.

What releases are you currently working on; and what labels will they be released on?

I haven’t been in the studio as much this past six months, mainly because my label has been on hold. The last thing that I did was a remix for a new American label called Nitrolyte Records. The original track is a trance tune that we’ve (Mik Cree and I) made into a NRG stomper with our remix. It still has a euphoric trance section in the first part of the break but then kicks with a nasty riff that grinds along to keep the hard house punters happy.

I’m planning on writing some tracks tailored for my sets in the future. I’d like to have a few tunes that you’ll only here me play.

You’re from a stable of DJs which is totally suited to the Vicious Circle sound; and you’ve had a couple of your tracks released on the label. Are there anymore plans for future VC releases?

I’ve always supported the label since they first started years ago. I think I’ve played nearly every release and they’re up to 56 or so now. I did a couple of the earlier releases on VC but have more recently done remixes for them rather than original tracks.

It’s always a pleasure to be involved in a release on VC as it’s the number one label in our scene. No doubt I’ll be working with them again sometime in the future.

You’ve playing an incredible amount of parties during your career. Which has been your favourite?

This is such a hard question as there have been so many good ones and for different reasons. Camden Palace holds fond memories for me, I’ve played some of my favourite parties at this venue. Solid Sunday was amazing. This was a smaller Sunday afternoon party up in North London each week, which sadly stopped a few years ago. The atmosphere in this place was awesome, I’ll never forget it.

Where do you see the hard dance scene going over the next 12 months?

At a guess I’d say things will pretty be the same as they are now. The scene isn’t as vibrant as it once was but there are still loads of great nights to go to and new nights starting with different ideas. There will always be decent club nights to go to, maybe just not as many to choose from.

CDs are quickly taking over from vinyl; but how long do you think it will be become the majority will be mainly from MP3s

Most of my sets consist of mainly CDs now. Come to think of it most DJs I know play at least 50% of their sets from CD so I think vinyl really is losing the battle now. I didn’t like using CDs at first, but I’ve now come round to the idea because you can do more with the CD players and they are much easier to carry around.

About you...

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Vodka and The O.C. My mates always take the piss out of me for The O.C. I own both series on dvd and watch it religiously on a sunday afternon and Tuesday evening. Sad but true, haha

What’s currently in your pockets?

Wallet, phone and keys. I don’t like carrying around loads of stuff in my pockets. Keep it simple

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be?

I’d just be doing my block paving I’d imagine. I only know this or DJing, as I’ve never had any other jobs

What was the tackiest holiday you’ve ever been on? Why was it so bad?

Disneyland Paris, we took my daughter there a couple of years ago and I hated every minute. I fell asleep on the train after a heavy weekend so we ended up missing our stop and going to Bruxelles. While we were waiting for our train back to Paris my daughter’s suitcase was stolen which had all her favourite toys in. We then had to pay another £130 to get back to Paris and the rest was just a nightmare when we eventually got there. That was the worst £2000 I’ve ever spent.

On a high note I went to Dubai for two weeks last November and that was amazing. I’d recommend that to anyone, but stay well clear of Disneyland Paris.

Which your favourite clothes shop/label and what was the last thing you bought?

My favourite label is Hugo Boss. The last things that I bought were a leather jacket, belt and jeans by Hugo Boss.

More: Just when you thought clubbing at the Fridge couldn’t get better – it’s just about to. Back by huge demand is the mighty I LOVE VC. After two mind blowing visits to the capital, Vicious Circle’s offspring is on its way back! It was touch and go for a while due to overwhelming demand for the night, but we’ve managed it and it’s happening sooner than expected!

Saturday 22nd April is when the fierce are back with a line-up that totally defines the fast and furious side of hard dance. The I Love VC concept has been a phenomenal success since it was launched last summer, and in that time the event has spread its magic to every major club in the land. The album has brought a different meaning to the word ‘Compilation’ and fought hard at the Hard Dance Awards and still continues to sell. And in addition the I Love VC website has got to be the most cutting edge piece of web space in dance, having undergone a recent redesign, and if you aint looked yet – Do so now!

Leader of the pack on Saturday 22nd couldn’t be anyone other than Mr Vicious himself – Paul Glazby, and roped in as a first of two special guests is a legend personified - Pete Wardman! Ruler of the trade dance floor and late night resident on Kiss FM for many years, Wardman has earned his place amongst the legends of hard house 10 times over. If you’ve yet to experience flawless mixing – come check him out! And our second guest, who I Love VC are proud to showcase, the talents of Toolbox recordings chief – Nik Denton. Having surfaced at the time when Tony De Vit was carving hard dance as a credible genre, Nik was probably too young to be on any dance floor let alone Trade! However that experience paid off and the result is what he is now - one of the hottest young talents on the hard dance scene! Nik will be devastating the main floor as well as performing a toolbox house set in the Lab! Next up we have everyone’s favourite eye candy, the one and only Justin Bourne who steps up to deliver a set we’re calling "Bourne Again Classics". The clue is in the name! Then fast and furiously we have Karim who makes his I Love VC debut and no doubt will leave the place in pieces as this DJ can’t stop and won’t stop! Also on the night we have Insekt's own - James Nardi who'll be warming up the fridge, and getting it rocking early as it has been on the last 2 VC's! And last but by very much not least, we have Mixmag’s future hero, and VC’s own - Ben Stevens to complete the Vicious Arena. Then in the very suitably orchestrated Lab where you'll hear the finest house and techno, we have tenPM, Nik Denton and Tim Clewz!

We really cannot emphasise how huge this night is shaping up to be. An uber line-up, expanded production on previous events and gimmicks online brought to you like no other outfit in the land.

It’s all here for your immediate perusal, so click away and see what it’s all about www.ilovevc.com
