The first big Tasty of 2006 reviewed

Time for the first big Tasty of 2006 and knowing Tasty is always a sell-out party I had to get my plans set nice and early so I knew I wouldn’t be missing this event for anything. I remember when I first clapped eyes on the line up for this party I knew back then it was going to be of those nights that would be talked about for months after. Tasty still remains one of the UK’s most popular underground parties, and it goes without saying that Tasty is a truly unique journey that will stay in your mind for months on end. It’s not just about the music, it’s not just about the venue nor is it just about the djs that’s play. Tasty is a combination of everything: the quality of music, the star studded djs, the mind blowing décor, and not forgetting the crystal clear sound that takes our brains into another dimension.
Tasty is about a whole underground clubbing experience that quite simply blows you away. What I love most about Tasty is the fact they cater for a variety of clubbers. We were given the Freeformation hardcore room where the highest stamina is needed; with the Freeformation anything goes: as their campaign says ‘get wise’ and ‘get stupid’ so if you want to let your hair down do something totally insane that was the room to be in (It wasn’t for the fainthearted that’s for sure!). Then we had the hard dance room which kicked off all night with every hard dance fanatic punching the air as hard as they knew how to. In the third room you had Raindance where you clubbers found a sense of Euphoria and got lost in the the old school.
On Saturday April 1st, Tasty returned with their 1st main event of 2006. With three rooms to suit every taste, there was no chance of me not enjoying myself. This party was musically the best Tasty I have ever been to. I arrived just in time for Little Gem’s and Reece Elliot’s back to back set and they warmed us up brilliantly and seemed to be having good fun behind the decks. Between them they dropped in some great uplifting floor fillers such as ‘Carte Blanche’, ‘Loops n Tings’ and ‘Red Snapper’ and I thought they worked really well together.
After their set we went off into the Freeformation room to see Kevin Energy, and what a great set that was. Kevin and Sharkey had the whole room in the palm of their hands and they both stuck to the Freeformation campaign. They were both really fooling around and making everyone laugh. At one point during a classical sample in one of the tunes both of them started playing with invisible violins, I was in stitches. If anyone knows how to really enjoy themselves behind the decks it’s those two! Kevin’s set was flawless and his cutting and scratching was perfect. When Kevin dropped in ‘Voodoo’ the drive on the dancefloor just accelerated, so much so I felt out of breath just watching. It’s good when djs have fun behind the decks as it rubs off onto the dancefloor!
After Kevin’s set we popped down stairs to see what was going on in the Raindance room. It was kicking off nicely and the dancefloor was already rammed. PK was playing his last set before he goes off to Egypt and he dropped in some real crowd pleasers such as ‘Everybody’s Free’ and ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’. There was an amazing atmosphere in that room and PK looked like he was in his element. I wish I could have stayed for longer but my hard house was calling me back upstairs.
Next up in the hard house room was Greg Brookman, who played a brilliant set. I loved all of the tunes he played and again his mixing was flawless. I really love his style of mixing and the way he progresses his sets. The dancefloor was pretty busy and I looked around and all I could see were people dancing wearing the biggest smiles.
Following Greg Brookman was Roosta b2b Skol and their set was uplifting and fun. They played classic hard house that got everyone in the mood. When Skol dropped in ‘I Just Can’t Stop’ there was a cheer of appreciation across the room and everyone started dancing that little bit harder.
Due to HHA hosting Psycadelic Academy and the Fridge hosting Twisted, Tasty wasn’t as rammed as usual but to be honest I preferred it that way. It was nice to have more room dance, and even though it wasn’t as rammed there was such chemistry on the dancefloor that it didn’t matter.
Up next was the King of Filth Justin Bourne and as usual he banged it out. He played a real variety of tunes and while I didn’t think he was as on form as usual, he still played a great set. When he dropped in ‘The Red Pill’ everyone went completely crazy.
And last but no means least was Andy Whitby b2b with Billy Bunter and what a set that was, I was pretty intrigued beforehand as I don’t usually like Andy Whitby doing back to backs. His style is so unique I normally prefer to see him play on his own. But that two hour set blew me away and I didn’t stop dancing. They played great uplifting tunes such as ‘Angel’ and ‘Set You Free’ and also some great bouncy tunes for measure, my favourite being the Bad Behaviour mix of ‘Something In Me’.
They also played a few old classics like ‘Zombie Nation’. I thought Billy Bunter's mix of Storm’s ‘Time to burn’ into ‘Carte Blanche’ was excellent. During that set I stomped so hard I thought I was going to make a crack in the dancefloor, their set flowed brilliantly and their tune selection was perfect. I also loved Andy’s mash up (the Tidy Weekender one that everyone’s been talking about), I thought it was cleverly constructed and as soon as it started the few people that were sitting were straight on their feet and they were going completely ballistic. There was so much energy in that room I didn’t want the night to end.
What I love about Tasty is the djs seemed to really enjoy themselves too and they appeared to let their hair down and interact with everyone, showing how much they were enjoying being there. I have to say Tasty has the friendliest clubbers I have ever met in clubbing, wherever you looked you were greeted by smiling clubbers dressed in the most amazing outfits. It’s so great to see so much effort go into one event and the end result: a club full of satisfied clubbers and one great big smile on my face! I can’t wait till the next one.
