The Innovate & Riot! InnovateEP Launch Party reviewed Reported by Winter Phoenix / Submitted 22-03-06 20:45 Innovate, from the Latin word innovāre to renew, is not just the clever name it would seem. Having spent the better half of the week at home with pink eye (or as I consider a more appropriate name, gank eye) I was not in the best mood by the time the weekend came. In fact I feared not being able to say much positive in my mood about a night at the Fridge, which a while ago now was my favourite party place. I’m sure other people have had fantastic experiences but mine personally has been that in recent years much of the Fridge’s former glory has been lost as successful promotions move up to bigger venues and the rest pale into the hazy obscurity of nothing, or perhaps a small pub on the outskirts of London with nice lighting and a few comfy sofas. So as the days shortened to the Innovate & Riot! InnovateEP Launch Party, I considered what a promotion with such a fresh snazzy name would have to bring to the party, so to speak. I and my band of merry men came tumbling out of the Underground forest into the hamlet of Brixton around 11.30. Mooching into the club at a sceptical speed but with a happy little faces and chitter, we’d all been quietly concerned we weren’t wearing our party hats. I have to say after the initial scurrying about and organising of coats, bar and toilet trips I was quickly comfortable. The place was buzzing with excitement and energy, and I was happy to melt into the new arrivals familiarizing themselves with the walls and ceilings of the Fridge by taking a turn of the rooms and spin on the dance floor. I found the Crazy Polish Lady and company and we were soon dancing with Ali Wilson. It was early on and the music set the mood perfectly, but before long I realised I had departed from my band completely. So with the intention of saving my feet for later I went to the Ice box, hosted by Boundless. If like myself, you haven’t ventured down to the Fridge in a while (unlikely for most of you lot I know) you’d be pleased with the Ice box. The ceiling draped with white material, reminiscent of a cyber-Moroccan lounge and décor bringing a wicked ambience to the room gave me a fluffy feeling about the evening that took me by surprise. The music was delectably trancey and people friendly and beaming. Although I am a self confessed trance fairy, with slightly heavier feet in my boots I was drawn back into the main room. Carrying my fluffy feelings with me I rejoined the Merry Men on the dance floor and we all quite happily had a groove, bounce and frolic. At every turn my mood was lifted, before you lot start thinking all sorts of deplorable things, it wasn’t the drink. It was tune after tune that got me smooching up my face with delight. It was a surrounding sea of happy faces and the odd body scattered about clearing space through over excitement. It’s these moments that kept me on the dance floor when I started clubbing, that so many nights have lost. And then it happened. As if by magic, as sea of bubbles came waving down to the crowd. Call me a crazy lady, but bubbles to me are like cat nip to a Kitten. Seriously. I could rant on about them for a while but I have a tendency to do that at the best of times, so instead I would just like you all to think about bubbles for a minute and how they shine and float. That should instil in you the happy glow that lit in me that moment and exploded like the bubbles into the rest of my evening. To be honest I was having such a good time that the rest of the night slipped away from me so quickly I barely had time to catch my breath. Sitting here writing this my mind is a flood of faces and laughs, special moments and private jokes through out the night. And dancing. Dancing until my soles hurt in that pleasurable way things hurt after they’ve taken the best kind of beating. My dear sweet bubble, I haven’t danced like that in ages! The music was awesome consistently. I’m no good with dj names or how tight a mix this was and how well collaborated that tunage is. It’s good, bad or ugly. But three points during the night I was feeling the dance floor so much I asked a fellow follower of the vibe for a name. Although every dj playing did an awesome job, Nick Rowland, Ehren Stowers and Phil Reynolds are the names that stand out on my otherwise mental scribbles from the back pocket of my belt. I felt at some point I should ask the audience how they were doing. I would like to mention at the time we were in the embrace of the Boundless crew, who put on an awesome show both visually and musically and for whom I share an equal part of appreciation of the night. After less than a seconds' contemplation a man who shall remain nameless (because of his International man of mystery status) answered me with perfect clarity ‘I’m having a fantastic night. And everyone I’ve spoken to has said I’m having a fantastic night also’. Then at 5am the sounds of The Prodigy spilled out of the speakers and rumbled through the air with a chaotic delight that made me and everyone in my immediate vicinity spring into action. To whoever played that bad boy, what a classic crowd satisfier so perfectly placed — I tip my hat to you. Throughout the club an effort had been made to dress up, my favourite of the decorations being the huge studded and unconventional mirror ball in the centre of the main dance floor. I’m sure Riot had brought its spirit to the dance floor and the meeting of these crowds made for an excellent atmosphere. The Club wasn’t packed but it was full enough to feel the love and keep the dance floor busy until 6am, with enough space not to be removing eye balls when I lifted my arms. During the night I noticed a poster advertising the next Innovate, which will be meeting with Zoology/Puzzle Project and I have to say one that sounds set to be another winning combination. I’ll be sorry to miss it. It seems Innovate really is a promotion creating something not new, but renewed, bringing together a collection of people with the right recipes for good vibes. I am no expert on dance music or connoisseur of the club scene, so all I can give is opinions of a night experienced through the senses of a clubber. Innovate gave me an energy that had me on the dance floor until the lights came up and the music went down, something I haven’t done in a long time. For that I am truly thankful. Hats off to Boundless who came in early and decorated the Ice Box until it was barely recognisable - the white sheets and the 2 extra lazers definitely made one hell of a difference!
