Junior's Jamm: a preview with Junior J

Reported by Tania von Pear / Submitted 15-11-05 12:00

Junior J is a DJ impossible not to notice, whether it’s his energetic sets behind the decks or his famous “antennae” dreadlocks on a 6ft frame! Over the past year Junior has been building a name for himself in a very unassuming manner. He doesn’t shout or boast about his talents, he simply lets his music do the talking, in fact if you’ve ever met him you will realise what a shy, gentle guy he really is!

Junior has been picking up props from his dancefloor fans as well as some of his fellow DJs, so we thought we’d have a quick chat with him as he is about to take a major step up with his very own night at Brixton’s hottest new venue Jamm on Saturday 19th November. Look out behind you, cos here comes Junior’s Jamm!

Introduce yourself please…

W'Sup, I’m Jnr J... what day is it again?

You’ve been creating a stir with the funky crowd around London town — tell us about the places you’ve been playing?

It’s been quite busy and I seem to have infiltrated the tougher end of funky house and the electro house crowd. I’ve recently done gigs at Egg, Turnmills, Telegraph, Pacha, Canvas & MoS as well as some wicked smaller venues and have had fun playing for some amazing promotions who pull some of the best crowds to play to in London.

Describe your musical style for us.

Electro based filthy relentless house music!!!!!!

Junior’s Jamm is a big step forward as I understand it’s the first big party you have put on… how are you feeling and what are you looking forward to the most?

I’m feeling quite good as there is a buzz going around but I’m still working hard at it. When asked what I wanted by the DJ booth I requested a mini fridge with Malibu, Jack Daniels and a bottle of poppers so I’m looking forward to that. But mostly I wanna create the kinda party that I wanna go to, which means wicked danceable house music and a great crowd whose primary reason for being there is to dance... dance like no one’s watching!

I’ve heard that it’s going to be a family affair with your Mum running the door… how did that come about and do you think it’s wise that she might see you in a worse for wear state?

I’ve basically got the coolest mum in the world who had supported me every step of the way in my Djing so I just wanted to give her a chance to see what I’m up to. But damn I didn’t think about that... I may have to get her to leave early or save myself for the after party.

You’ve booked electro hero King Roc to play the headline set who is a Brixton local like yourself… why did you choose him?

When I was asked who I want to do the opening night of Junior’s Jamm King Roc was the first name out of my mouth! I’m loving his music in an almost unhealthy way but wanted to hear him play to make sure we’d all love it. It was in this process that I realised not only did I already know him, but only by his birth name, I had also Djed for him on two different occasions at Ignition @ Inigo but more importantly I’ve personally heard him and loved his DJing. What a result!

Francisco (who is also playing) and yourself are part of the Throb Crew — how will this night differ from their parties?

The main difference will be the music policy, where Throb is more funky touching filth, Junior’s Jamm will be more filth with a splice of funk. It will also be for the clubber that demands that little a bit more from their music who are more interested in a tune being wicked rather than if it’s a big tune. But I really wanna try and capture the bits that make Throb so special, such as the awesome havin it crowd, the friendly atmosphere and also the unwankyness...
(Unwankyness; adjective; not trying to conform to what’s perceived as in or cool but just being one’s self, whether cool or not.)
OK, so I arrive at the party with my mates ready to rock… what can I expect to find when I walk through the door?

You’ll be greeted by my Mum who may tell you to behave yourselves, just nod say yes whilst knowing your there to do the complete opposite. You’ll enter the lounge area where you’ll see people loving and dancing to DJ Chewy’s set. You’ll notice a few people sitting down for a minute catching their breath then running back into the main room. You’ll follow them in and probably see me dancing like no one’s watching with the biggest grin on my face in the middle of a heaving havin it dance floor with the best electro house you’ve ever heard. Join in!

Now for the quick fire round…

Favourite producer?

King Roc

Favourite club?

MoS

Favourite record shop?

Uptown Records

Best night out?

Nasty Dirty Sex Music

Builder’s tea or Earl Grey?

Earl Grey in a builders flask

Nike or Adidas?

Bothered!

Vinyl or CDs?

Both

Download or record shop?

Record shop

Sugababes or Girls Aloud?

Girls Aloud

Sex, drugs or rock n roll?

All… if you can guarantee Mum won’t find out!

And finally, can you PLEASE explain your antennae dreadlocks…what’s that all about??!?!

It’s the next big thing that will replace CD mixers & the I-pod decks... it’s a way for me to receive radio signals on the dance floor, what the crowd don’t see is the lead that goes from me to the mixer so I can play my music directly through my hair... only thing is Heart Fm may cut in and out of my sets but at my last gig they thought it was a Dolly Parton remix... It went off big time!

Thanx for havin me and I hope to see you on da floor!

More: Love Music — Love Dancing — Love Jnr J

Jnr J, Londons hottest DJ right now, presents his own hometown gig, a chance for him to play his favouritest, filthiest, records and to invite his favourite DJs and producers to come down and do their thing.

Jnr was born and bred 500 yards from Jamm and this will be a family affair with Jnr’s mum hosting the night!

If you haven’t seen Jnr work his magic yet you are in for a treat, this boy has the skills and charisma (both of which are lacking in many DJs these days) to take apart any crowd piece by piece and throw them back together in ways they don’t even understand.

This is not going to be a nice fluffy night in but a downright dirty sweaty messy happy grooving party of a night for those that like their house music innovative, relentless and up for it.

Saturday 19th November — Launch Night featuring King Roc.

Oh yes here it comes Jnr is limbering up for his opening night and we are ensuring that there is enough vodka and poppers (Jnr’s rider) in South London to keep him happy. Get your dancing shoes on and get ready for a filthy and relentless night of mayhem.

When we asked Jnr who he would like to play at the launch night, the first name that sprang from his lips was King Roc. Martin a.k.a. King Roc has been bashing out some fat, dirty, electro productions recently that have been getting serious props from DJ’s as diverse as Pete Tong: “Luvly stuff – I like a LOT!”, Steve Lawler: “Big!!! going on my essential mix!!!” and Justin Robertson: “Been hammering both sides!”. His sound is absolutely perfect for Jnr’s Jamm, if you like Tom Neville then your going to love King Roc.

As well as being a top notch producer he is an absolutely rocking DJ. He describes his style as being for “digital pimps and dirty girls, everything from deep bleepy freakery to groovy grinding electronic madness... depending on the occasion.” If you saw Jnr doing his special dance last time he saw King Roc play you would know what we’re talking about.

Warm up will be provided by resident DJ Francisco (Throb). Also in the back room banging out the tech/breaks/house will be the fabulous Thristy DJ's.
