Interview with Damo of HeatUK and Kirk from Radical Escapes, ahead of the adventure on the high seas that is... The Voyage
Reported by Just call me HEAT UK
/
Submitted 30-10-05 12:46
On the weekend of November 4–6 an event takes place on board a cruise ship, with one of the greatest hard dance line-ups ever assembled. The Voyage has been billed as the ‘mother of all boat parties’ and is another travel event from HeatUK and Radical Escapes. Famous for previous clubbing adventures such as Ibizan Heat, 24 Hours In Amsterdam, and the recent Dance Valley, the team behind The Voyage consists of Kirk Field of Radical Escapes, and Damian Gelle of HeatUK.
There will be several areas of sound on the boat, two nights of entertainment, and a surprise gig in Germany. Sets will include everything from hard dance to techno, house to electro. All the Heat favourites will be appearing, like Marc French, Ian Betts, Phil Reynolds, and Steve Blake, plus a whole variety of DJs from clubland… including a few new faces. Damian and Kirk took time out from packing their fluffies and glowsticks to get you even more excited about… The Voyage.
When did you first meet each other?
KF: I first encountered Damian back in 2002 through him hassling me to write about his club when I was Clubs Editor for TNT Magazine. We met some months later and discussed Ibiza, he reckoned he could get 400 people to the island if the product was right. I took that as a challenge and together we created Ibizan Heat, which is now established as the only week of the summer which provides lots of free hard house parties in the island’s top venues.
DG: I met Kirk through a mutual friend who at that time was running the Retox Bar in Covent Garden. The Retox was a kind of mid-week watering-hole for friends to chew the fat and catch up. Since then we’ve worked together on numerous travel events and there’s been a thousand laughs.
It must be a lot of fun at the start of summer when you both get to Ibiza with 400 like-minded clubbers…
KF: It is for Damian! His job is to host the parties and sample the sangria at the bar with a Viking helmet on. I get the short straw… checking the sound system has arrived for the boat party, ensuring people are met at the airport, making sure the coaches are on time… glamorous, huh?
Damian Gelle of HeatUK
A Viking helmet?
KF: Two years ago, I just got to bed at 8am after organising a group of 150 to go to Manumission, and had a meeting arranged at 11am with the boat captain to sort out the boat party the following day. Damian is on a mission, relentlessly texting me every 3 minutes, demanding I join him at Bora Bora for a drink. I politely declined, so he got Marcus Wallis to call me up and badger me. I asked him what kind of state Damo was in. He replied, “he’s stood at the bar, drinking from a large jug of sangria… with a plastic Viking helmet on his head.” I decided to stay in bed!
DG: He’s talking absolute nonsense. I end up being the one who has to stay sober — don’t think it’s all fun and games out there!
Don’t you ever get the chance to relax?
KF: People are always offering me drinks, and saying, “come on, join the party!” but someone has got to stay sane, or we wouldn’t get to the venues in the first place. I’ve enjoyed many long nights in clubland, believe me, these days I’m happy to see other people enjoy themselves… mind you, I do enjoy our recce visit in May.
DG: We visit all the major clubs on the island and see who’s interested in hosting our week of madness. It’s great because there is no one on the island, we get to stay in a huge villa next door to Judge Jules’ place and set up the tour. There’s no one to look after and the island is all ours.
Then came 24 Hours in Amsterdam — your whistle-stop, no-sleep weekend in Amsterdam.
KF: We both like to test the boundaries of clubbing, our events often attempt to push the envelope and try throwing parties no one else has ever thought of. Everyone goes to Amsterdam, but for 24 Hours to Amsterdam we threw a party on the high-speed ferry and wanted to keep the cost down. We remembered everyone telling us, “oh in Amsterdam you don’t sleep”… so we didn’t offer a hotel!
Kirk Field of Radical Escapes
DG: The 48 Hours In Amsterdam was an extended sequel to the first episode which included accommodation and allowed a little more time for people to explore such a fascinating city. We’re not going there this year but those trips were ground-breaking, anything kind of new in clubland is a real buzz for me.
Now you’re doing The Voyage — another ground-breaking event.
KF: Sea breaking, more like! This was born out of the fact I was involved in the legendary trips to Hamburg back in 2001. Everyone loves a boat party — this will be the mother of all boat parties. It combines the intimacy and privacy of a dance weekender, as everyone has a nice cosy cabin, with a full-on floating party — we’re putting a considerable amount of sound & lighting onboard to create 3 music areas. It will be like nothing else ever attempted in clubbing, and will attract only the true clubbers, so the atmosphere will be really special.
The true clubbers?
KF: Clubbers by their very nature should be explorers, pioneers and not be afraid to try new things. The only people who’ll be on board The Voyage will be those who love their music or want an adventure. Anyone else can spend their money in the same old clubs they go to week in, week out… and we’ll see who has the best weekend.
DG: I love boat parties — there’s something special about a moving nightclub. At the same time, a lot of people hate the thought of being stuck on a boat going down the Thames with no escape or time out from the music. What appeals to me is that this ship offers plenty of escapes from your own private cabins, to a free cinema, even to a casino!
How did you manage to get Fergie to sign up for this?
DG: I was booking BK for our next Evolution event at Koko in November and I happened to mention the cruise, and they share the same management. You’ll often find an artist of Fergie’s stature will be well up for an event like this if it’s new and exciting. I’m finding more of the bigger DJs are now looking for new and exciting prospects. He’s an amazing guest for an event like this.
Do all the DJs stay on board the whole time?
DG: Fergie’s got a gig Saturday night, so we’ll fly him out from Germany — Ian Betts as well. Ian was gutted when he thought he couldn’t go, I said “no Ian, I really want you to play, you’re the Heat resident. We’ve got to have you on board,” so he’s playing the Friday night.
So there’ll be loads of time when all the DJs and clubbers will be together?
DG: Yeah, there’ll be able to meet them, get their autograph, have a drink with them. K90’s on there for the whole weekend — he wants to ‘ave it! We booked him for the Friday night and then went to book flights for him, and he said “no no, I'm not doing that gig now, I want to stay on the boat!”
I predict some shenanigans.
DG: Yeah, just with having cabins on board you’ve got shenanigans haven't you? There’s going to be some madness. There’s a group of girls that are coming, and they’re bringing let’s say… very nice attire for the casino — we have a proper Casino Royale night!
So… can you swim?
DG: Erm I'm good for about 20 metres with a push off the boat! By the Sunday I’ll make about ten metres, and Sunday on the way back I reckon I'd just sink to the bottom!
What are you most looking forward to?
DG: Rage With The Machines but I'm not allowed to reveal who that is. They’re a new live act. Two old rock ‘n’ roll burn outs who have come out of retirement and want to remain anonymous until their debut. Their aim is to challenge the dance music scene with an innovative live act which uses the latest cutting edge technology. Also Fergie’s three hour sets.
Can you tell us what happens when the boat gets to Germany?
KF: Ahh, that’s a mystery! Let’s just say people may be very surprised where they end up on Saturday afternoon!
Can we expect more Voyage cruise weekenders next year?
KF: Sadly not — we’ve just received news that the ferry company are selling the boat and closing the route the very day we get back, so ours will be the last ever sailing. So this is the only chance people will have to experience this event. Believe me, it will be talked about for years from now. It’s gonna be one to tell the grandkids about!

From the creators of the legendary IMPACT! club cruises! VOYAGE represents a milestone in UK club culture: a dance weekender without the mud, no cold chalets or caravans, no queues, no night buses, no taxis, no rip-off drinks prices (there’s no VAT when you’re at sea), just you and all your friends with your favourite DJs on one big party cruise ship with your own private cabin.
This is the biggest line-up of DJs ever seen at sea! Over 40 DJs and 500 clubbers, three separate music areas, (additional sound & light production will include 16 kw opus audio system & fully rigged intelligent lighting), with a free cinema showing cult movies, licensed casino, piano & cocktail bar, swift-serve cans, bar & choice of a la carte & buffet restaurants, plus café, shop/off licence & private en suite cabins (air conditioned, some with a romantic sea view), ensure that your time on The Heat Cruise ship (also known as the m.s Duchess of Scandinavia) can be as relaxing as it is full-on & firing!
All Hands on Decks!
Outward LEG
Setting sail at sunset on Friday afternoon November 4, the turntables start turning straight away as we head out to sea - the first twenty pounds you spend is on us as each package includes £20 onboard spending money!
After chilling out in your cabin for a few hours we arrive Saturday morning at a small port in Northern Germany. A short coach ride away is the medieval harbour of Cuxhaven, surrounded by narrow cobbled streets, hiding a variety of small shops, cafés & bars. We’re taking you to a special club in Germany where one DJ will be playing a special 3 hour set.
Alternatively, you can sample the local delicacies & renowned regional brews and maybe a bit of traditional music for a few hours shore-leave before heading back to our floating pleasure palace.
Homeward Bound
Around sunset on the Saturday (November 5) we once again cast off for the return leg and perhaps retiring to your cabin to prepare for the final nights festivities. Enjoy a meal with friends at the excellent Seven Seas restaurant, or maybe catching a film in the (free) cinema prior or a cocktail or two in the piano bar, the choice is yours.
After which, the naughty nautical behaviour continues again and doesn’t stop until we reach Blighty at 10am the next Sunday morning.
After arriving back into Harwich, it is a coach ride into Liverpool Street so those who need to rest have the whole afternoon and night to recover those other pirates left standing can continue on to a Sunday Session!
‘Voyage’ is the mother of all boat parties and something we guarantee you’ll be telling your grandchildren about! Don’t delay booking because once the boat is full there is nothing we can do.
