Reviewed: Riot! @ The End | 4th Birthday Carnival | 28/08

Reported by K8-e / Submitted 05-09-05 09:28

“I predict a riot, I predict a riot!” — I couldn’t get the Kaiser Chiefs’ tune out of my head in the days leading up to the Riot 4th Birthday Carnival. The build up on Harderfaster was frenetic with threads springing up daily, and then more frequently as the last few days drew closer. There was definitely a buzz surrounding the return of Riot! to The End after a spell away over summer.

I had a pretty action packed weekend and by Sunday I’d decided I was crazy to be considering trading a day in bed for a trip to London, but a reviewer’s got to do what a reviewer’s got to do and as we drove up the A3 sometime after midday I couldn’t help but wonder what lay ahead. Who would trade glorious sunshine for a day in an underground club? What was all this daytime clubbing malarky about anyway? I was about to find out.

There were a few people hanging around outside on the street in clubbing gear and my initial concerns about what people would be wearing there were allayed (I am a girl!). We strolled in and descended the steps into the unknown and I quickly realised the light jacket I’d brought with me was going to be wholly unnecessary, it was more than toasty enough already. It was like stepping into another world, there were quite a few people there already and I was immediately greeted by a familiar face. The vibe was friendly and we settled down for a drink in the funky room. Trying to adjust from afternoon sunshine to club environment was somewhat odd but the bar area lighting was really chilled, like a kaleidoscope throwing shapes on the wall and the music was decidedly upbeat but funky. I’m not really into the funkier side of things but it was the perfect setting to acclimatise and make that transition from day to club. A few people were already dancing and the atmosphere was friendly. After getting our second round of drinks (prices always seem high to me in London so I won’t comment!) harder things were calling and I made my way to the main room to catch some of new residents Type 1.

The strains of ‘Just Kick!’ — Cohen vs Deluxe had pulled me on the dancefloor and then they mixed in Mauro Picotto & Fergie – ‘Funkytech’ (with the ‘Funky Town’ sample in it) and the crowd just responded so well. As a dj it’s always exciting to see tunes you own getting an airing and really working a dance floor. I was hooked, and the rest of their set was just as appealing. Best of all they seemed to be having an amazing time — a great way to start off their main room residency at Riot. One of the things I spotted at this point was that because the dj booth is practically floor height you can watch what the djs are doing. I sort of got a peek at what Type 1 were doing but decided not to be so geeky and kept dancing.

After time out to chat to some more familiar faces in the bar area it was time for some of DJ Misjah. I love my techno and was really looking forward to this little did I realise the treat I was in store for. This man just blew me away. I started off dancing but by the end of the set I was just stood next to the dj booth open mouthed as I watched him effortlessly mix on 3 decks tunes after tune. The crowd were really into it, not having been to Riot before I wasn’t sure if full on techno would be what people were after but it was doing the job. To be honest djs of this calibre really make me feel I have SO much to learn. Technically this has to be one of the best sets I’ve ever seen, a really great follow on to a top warm up from Type 1, a real pace setter.

I seemed to always be at the bar every time there was a dj change in the main room, as when I came back this time I found BK and Nick Sentience had taken up their positions with various bits of kit to do their much hyped Live PA. Praga Khan — ‘Injected with the Poison’ was playing when I took my space back left of the booth (I was quite liking the sound coming out from the monitors and my partner in crime had rooted himself there for the day so it was our meeting point). I was idly wondering what sort of stuff we would be treated to and for some reason was really not expecting to hear BK’s ‘Revolution’ but soon enough you could hear the strains of it coming in and the atmosphere in the main room just surged. I love those moments when you feel the whole crowd lift up and you lift up with them, definitely a cheesy grin on my face moment, and then again as the strains of NRG — ‘Never Lost His Hardcore’ came in afterward. I was beside myself with excitement and the crowd just seemed to lap it up as well. There was a bit of a technical hitch at the end of ‘Revolution’ where the music cut out for a few seconds, not sure what happened — but full service was resumed quickly.

BK & Nick Sentience

Again I seemed to miss the point that the Live PA stopped and BK started dj’ing (clearly everyone was out to confuse me!). I wasn’t sure whether the PA had ended early or whether that was always the plan but BK had set to the decks and was delivering some quality tunage. I thought Ed was the only one pegged to play the classics set but BK seemed to be giving the classics a good rinsing, tunes like Prodigy — ‘No Good (Start the Dance)’ and TDV — ‘Are You All Ready’. Maybe they had too many requests they wanted to honour? Or maybe BK just felt like classics were the right way to go, either way I was happy. I don’t get to go pure hard house clubbing much so hearing loads of tunes I love and being able to watch BK mix them first hand was one of those glorious moments I won’t forget. Perhaps I may have been staring a bit too much (sorry BK if I scared you!) but I don’t really get to watch enough djs mix and the set up at the End is just perfect for it.

Ed Real

As Ed came came over to take the decks for the last set I wondered how much better it could possibly get?! The crowd were excitable and totally fired up. By the point I’d realised that I hadn’t actually sat down properly since 4pm. I actually can’t walk very far so standing up for this amount of time isn’t good for me and my feet were killing me! Normally I’m the first person to find the seats when clubbing but the music and general atmosphere at Riot had kept me on my feet for hours. I was actually in shock thinking about it — a real testament to what a party this was! Consequently I only managed to dance for twenty minutes or so to Ed’s set and then just had to find somewhere to sit down. The handy sofas at the back of the main room and a podium were my friends for the last hour (I didn't want to miss any of his set but I just couldn't stand anymore) as Ed banged out tune after tune. I’ve read that a lot of people thought Ed’s was the best set of the night – he definitely got thru loads of classics (Prodigy — ‘Everybody in the Place’, Dj Misjah & Tim — ‘Access’, Base Graffiti — ‘House Always Wins’, Dj Isaac — ‘Nobody Listens to Techno’ and some) and kept the energy levels high and the atmosphere at peak. I’m not sure I could choose a favourite set though to be honest, each one was special in different ways and each built the event for me and followed on from the other to create an awesome day. The climax after they turned they lights on and started to usher everyone out was a group singing “I predict a Riot!” on the main dance floor. And again that song was stuck back in my head!

The thing I immediately liked about Riot was that it felt like more of a party than a club and for a Sunday afternoon that’s the feel you are looking for I think. I actually didn’t know that many people there (although I knew there would be loads of HFers) but it just didn’t matter. Everyone was friendly, there were smiles across the dancefloor, at the bar, the vibe was just perfect. I was warned the End could be too hot and too loud. It’s certainly not as hot as Camden Palace and it was REALLY busy. And my ears only rang slightly after I left. I did actually take some foam ear plugs with me but decided not to wear them. I thought the sound levels/volume were fine. Whilst I’m not really into my funky music (unless its techno!) the soundtrack in the bar area was wicked. Plenty of people were dancing in there all afternoon and the music was chunky, a great alternative if the main room was getting a big much. I’m only sorry I didn't get a chance to enjoy more time in there but the main room was just too much of a draw for me.

So I guess my only complaints are there isn’t really a chill out area where you can sit down and have a chat with people and sometimes getting served at the bar was a bit of a mission. Neither of these really detracted from the amazing day I had though and neither would stop me from going back. I guess both are the price you pay for having it at the End and to be fair I really liked the venue and felt it suited in a lot of ways. Riot was a party I’d been meaning to try for a while and their return to the End was definitely something special, not to be forgotten. Never having been before I can’t compare it to previous events but it’s been said on the threads that Riot is back on form. This will go down for me as one of the best daytime events I’ve ever been to and I can’t wait to get back to Riot to see what more they have in store!

More: After our rammed return to The End, we our proud to deliver the next installment in our quest to bring the best hard dance and tough dirty funk to London.

Our first-rate residents are joined at the helm by 20 year-old psy-hard dance pioneer Eskimo who will be showcasing tracks from his forthcoming triple album project alongside Belgium pioneer Yves Deruyter who delivered his anthem 'Calling Earth' in 1994 and re-shaped the European tech-trance sound. This track is still played by the likes of Ed Real and BK at Riot! and beyond and we are proud to have him grace our turntables for his first UK appearence in years.

Rising dirty housers Deepgroove have recorded and remixed for Junior Boys Own and UMM Records and are tipped for the top by Mixmag. Prepare to be dazzled!
