Insekt Preview: 13 Years & Counting – An Insight Into Justin Bourne

Reported by Toomz / Submitted 12-01-05 10:36

Justin Bourne is a name that has been seen headlining events worldwide for a number of years, from as far a field as Australia & Japan, right down to the intimate venues of London & the UK. His immense mixing ability & friendly, up for it attitude has seen Justin rise through the ranks to turn out at the forefront of the Hard House scene, unleashing his unmistakeable style. A hectic production schedule has created many much loved tunes, signed to the scenes biggest labels, which of course includes Justin’s own, much admired Short Circuit Recordings. We caught up with the man that was “Bourne” to DJ to find out a bit more, ahead of his 3hr B2B Showcase with Paul Glazby, at January's Insekt!

When did you first become involved in the clubbing scene? How did that develop into a love for mixing & when were you given your big break?

I started mixing when I was very young. I used to listen to tapes of Carl Cox, Grooverider, etc instead of doing my schoolwork and I was going clubbing from the age of 13 to see these DJs in action with my older mates. I bought my first pair of Technics decks at 15; I’m now 28, Jesus that’s gone quick! I started DJing at my school youth club two months after my 15th birthday and I’ve never looked back since.

I’ve played the early Rave stuff through to Hardcore & House but I’d say my professional DJ career of playing Hard House most weekends has only been from 1996. I had a few residencies playing House before this time but my main bulk has been from 1996. I remember my first main Hard House gig @ Gators in Bognor Regis, I was playing the last two and a half hours in the upstairs room and Jon The Dentist was on downstairs, I had loads of my mates with me and I was just buzzing off every beat. To my surprise I didn’t make a single mistake, which gave me more confidence to keep pursuing this career. 13 years on and I’m still at it, haha!

At what point did you realise this was the career for you, and that you should go for it & quit the day job?

I used to do block paving as a day job for over 7 years and back in 1999 I ripped a chest muscle while working and had to have time off in order for the damage to repair itself. It was at this time that I decided to quit my job and go full steam ahead with the DJ career. I was already playing most weekends but always kept my day job as well. I hated going in at 7am Monday mornings and it was a killer staying awake at the weekends doing my gigs so it seemed like the right time to make that decision. Luckily I haven’t regretted it.

Where have your biggest influences come from & how do they influence your sound today?
My biggest influence by far has been Pete Wardman. Around 1995 I felt a little bit lost with my music as I’d been playing Hardcore and House for years before this time and I wasn’t sure which I wanted to associate myself with. Then I heard Pete play for the first time of many, and it blew me away. The music he played was exactly what I was looking for, the balance between Hardcore & House music. It was Hard House or Hardbag as it was then known. Pete’s tune selection and technical ability were amazing and to this day I’ve yet to hear another DJ that can produce that raw energy, presence and ability behind a pair of decks. He’s a wicked guy as well. A true legend!

What do you do when you get a weekend off DJing?
It’s pretty rare at the moment to get a complete weekend off but when I do I like to spend it with my family. I have an 8yr old daughter so it’s nice to have free time with her and my girlfriend.

Why do you keep doing it?
F*ck knows! No seriously, I genuinely have a passion for this music and DJing. I couldn’t imagine giving it up. As long as people like to hear me play then I’ll still be around.

What keeps you pushing out tune after tune & bringing your own sounds to the scene?
To be honest I haven’t written an original track for over a year. The last one I did was called Get Back and that was 15 months ago. My engineer and studio partner Mik Cree and I have been remixing tracks each month over the past 12 months or so and we haven’t really had time to do our own stuff, although a lot of our remixes are like original tracks anyway. From a DJ’s point of view I only play a certain sound that I’m really into so I don’t always find loads of tracks that I think are good enough to play, so with making your own tunes you can produce music that you are 100% into and can use in your sets. I enjoy the process of making music, I hate rushing things just too get them finished, I like to make sure everything is tip top before we release it or pass on to the label that we are remixing for. Quality not quantity!

What other styles of music are you into?
Tough House, Techno and maybe a bit of Funky House. If I had to play a different style in a club then I’d definitely go for Tough House/Techno. Similar to DJs Malcolm Duffy, Sharp Boys or Carl Cox.

Where do you see Short Circuit Recordings in 1 year’s time & what have you got planned for the next few months?
I’m trying not to get too far ahead of myself with the label at the moment as I’m uncertain what the future holds. I hate to be negative but it seems like sales are dropping a bit more than last year so I’m just being careful. There are two of us working at Short Circuit now, Chris Comben and I, so this benefits the label especially on the promotional side of things as Chris now deals with loads of bits that I was struggling to find time to do. It’s great to have another persons input and help to make vital decisions.

I have the next three releases planned but I’m keeping the last two a secret so I can only tell you about the next release, which is a monster of a track by James Nardi & Julian Dwyer called Evil Genius. This really goes off whenever I’ve played it and it’s been kept exclusive to three or four DJ’s so that it’s not overplayed for when it’s released in early February. Keep an eye/ear out for this as I reckon it could be one of our best selling releases to date.

How do you feel about the influx of techno into the hard house scene for the past couple of years?
Yeah it’s cool. I really like music based on the groove rather than just bang, bang, bang all the time, but it’s not as obvious and uplifting as Hard House and too much of it played in one set can seem a little boring to your average Hard House nutter. I play the odd techno track or two in most sets but not loads.

Are there any new tunes doing the business on the dance floor you at the moment?
There have been some wicked tracks floating around over the last month or so.
My favourites are:
- Pete Wardman & Ryan Fisher – Drop It
- James Nardi & Julian Dwyer – Evil Genius
- OD404 – Whizz Bang
- Myself & Dynamic Intervention remix of ‘Marc Johnson & DMF – Kick Ass Elements and DJ Misjah & DJ Tim’s – Access.

What new producers have you kept your eye on this year? Any hot tips for 2005?
2004 has been a great year for Hard House producers. I wouldn’t say any of these were new producers but they have definitely been the most impressive this year. James Nardi & Julian Dwyer & Aftermath (James Nardi & Nick Irwin): these guys stand out the most for me. They’ve had a string of awesome tracks including Confusion, Evil Genius, Basuco Beat, Mad Dogs and a naughty little number that I can’t remember the name of, I was up allnight trying to think off it… It’s by Blue or Pink or something? I reckon these guys will smash it in 2005.
Also it has been great to see Pete Wardman busier than ever in the studio with new studio partner Ryan Fisher. I’ve been lucky enough to receive their forthcoming tracks on Tripoli, EUK etc and I have to say what a breath of fresh air it’s been to hear their music. My biggest tune over the past month has been their forthcoming track Drop It. This rocks!
Last and by no means least is Marc Johnson, his recent rampage of top class remixes such as Block Party & Implant on Tripoli have been going down a storm for me and I’d like to see loads more of him in 2005. Just on the production front though, haha!

Do you feel the scene will continue to move along the same groove next year as it has done the past few months or think it will a) start to calm down a bit, b) harden up even more, or C) take ideas and influences from other forms of house music into one?I think the main thing in 2005 will be lots of different genres of dance music merging into one again. Stop all this pigeon holing DJ’s and keep it more interesting. My ideal night wouldn’t just be playing Hard House music even though that’s what I play. I’d like to hear House, Techno, Hard House even Trance on the same bill to keep it interesting. I hope this will happen as it’s a tried and tested formula and I believe this will bring a new lease of life to the scene.

With the rising use of such sites as Soulseek etc, what effect do you feel this has on hardhouse record labels and the scene?
It’ll have an enormous effect on our labels if people are downloading the tracks early and in most cases they haven’t been authorised by the label or artist. The people that are downloading the tracks from these sites are the ones killing our scene and labels. I don’t think any Hard Dance label is making buckets of money we’re all doing it because it’s what we love.

You’re playing B2B with Paul Glazby for 3hrs at Insekt. Have you played B2B before & what have you got in store for us lucky people?
Paul and I have known each other for a number of years and we’ve played back to back about 4 or 5 times I think. Only twice in London though at Tasty and that was well over a year ago. I’m going to bring loads of Trance, Vocal House and Folk music, as I know Paul loves it, haha! No seriously, I’ll be bringing a mixed bag so we can play some classics, upfront stuff and maybe a bit of Techno thrown in. You’ll have to come along and see.

Insekt has been running for a couple of months now. How did you find your first time playing there & what hopes do you have for the night?
I really hope things go well and the clubbers take notice of the effort that the Insekt guys are putting in. The first event that I played at was awesome, it’s everything that I’d look for in a night and if I wasn’t DJing I’d be there anyway for the party. The most impressive thing for me is the knowledge of the people involved… DJs, producers, promoters with years of experience and Class A DJs as residents (I’m not talking about myself). The music progression from Tough House to the Hardest Hard House imaginable has been thought out and every DJ plays a vital role, not just slung in anywhere to play a set. The sound system is second to none as well and I was most impressed as I’d never been to Fire club before my Insekt debut. This could be the success story of 2005. Bring it on!

One of Londons finest afterparties, Twist, runs straight into Insekt’s closure. Will you be hanging around for a boogie afterwards?
Yeah, I’ll be there shaking my thang. I probably won’t be sober though. See you there!

The 3hr B2B Special is just a couple of weeks away on the 22nd January, which also includes Superfast Oz, Marc Johnson & Tim Clewz as part of Vicious Circles 2005 Tour.
Would like to thank Sarah Owens, Pete Barker, Simon Atherton & UKClubPix for the use of the photos.
