Quickfire Interview with Knowwhere favourite and London Legend Graham Gold!
Reported by Stevie
/
Submitted 15-12-04 23:02
Graham Gold has been DJing for the best part of the last 3 decades and in that time has become a legend in his own right. Covering all the spectrums of a dance music artist, from DJ to producer to one of Kiss FM's longest serving DJ's whilst on top of this promoted Peach for the better part of 11 years; this is one good man you definitely can't keep down! As well as being a regular on the dance club circuit he also continues to run Relative Records and used to head up a label called "Good As", which gave Tiesto one of his first releases in the UK!!
On top of all this, Graham works tirelessly for a number of charities and has donated much over the years to great causes. This year he even did the London to brighton bicycle race! We thought it was about time that we had a few words with the one and only Mr Gold, and after his fantastic performance at last month's Knowwhere, what better way than to get on the phone and have a chat with one of dance music’s longest serving names to find out what makes him tick.
Graham, you've been in the industry some time now, covering radio, club work, production et al, where did it all begin for you?
A long way back taking my own gear to "clubs" and playing for 7 quid a night!
You've played in a huge number of countries over the years. Is there anywhere that almost tempted you to not head back to the UK?
The Gold Coast in Oz!!! And Eilat in Israel!
Would you say you get more pleasure from radio or live work?
They are both SOOOOOO different, I love them both equally
Who was the most influential person in your early life, and who fills that role now?
A phenomenal DJ called Graham Cantor who was resident at Gullivers, the biggest black club in the UK in the 80's. He was awesome. He really guided me. Now, no-one really, I have big respect for a lot of Dj's like Armin, Ferry, John OO, who are all really good friends-not just DJ acquaintances.
Legend has it that Jimmy Saville was the first person to combine the use of two turntables, but who would you say was the most important individual in the appearance of the dance music scene?
Probably Chris Hill
What areas of the industry do you think are getting more exciting these days?
The internet!
Before you went down the music industry route, where had you thought you'd be career wise one day?
Always wanted to do this since I was 14. Knew I would too!!
The Peach phenomenon has been a big part of your time in clubland over the years, there have been some ups and downs in recent times, and just this month, an excellent revival at the 11th birthday celebrations at the Scala. What does the future hold for Peach and its followers?
I wish I could answer that, but Kiss own the brand. I know they are talking to a very powerful London Promoter to take it on, so fingers crossed he does, and fingers crossed I will still be part of it.
Are there still any big ambitions in the industry you'd like to achieve?
Of course! I have been hungry all my life, but they won't happen now!! (I always wanted Radio 1 and some there said it would probably happen but it didn't). There’s one thing I know I am good at and that is broadcasting -I have a huge passion for sharing my music and I know how to produce good radio.
Your recent appearance at Knowwhere was your third visit, including playing at Knowwhere in Ayia Napa this summer, is it my wit, Pablo's charm, Anthony's boyish good looks, or our cold hard cash that brings you back?
It's not the latter, that's for sure. Must be a combination of the first 2 PLUS Pablo’s lady has a great chest!!
Back to Ayia Napa again, there is an urban legend growing of a picture of you on your hands and knees, scrubbing the villa floor after the gig! Have you seen this yourself yet?
No, but they told me about it. And I was sober and NONE of the Other, (a good boy these days!!) My mum just brought me up to respect other people's places!!
You're on that famous desert island we've all heard of, you can take along three items, but some horrible person has declared no music orientated items are allowed, what goes in your pack?
My girlfriend, my girlfriend and my 1979 MG Midget!
If you were a movie character who would you choose to be?
Arthur!!
Tea or Coffee?
Tea every time-I drink about 30 cups a day!! Drinking a cup of Green Tea in a hotel in China while doing this actually!
What genres of music do you listen to other than dance?
NONE!! But I do like the Eagles! Doh!
On the days when music just isn't going to do it for you, what other things do you do to relax?
It always does is it for me, but I try to go out on my brand new Giant road bike and get to the gym. Scuba diving is my big love!
And finally, what do the next few months hold for you?
Trying to learn Logic Pro 6.4 which isn't easy as I seem to be travelling and dickhead here bought a tower instead of a laptop!!
