Bora-Bora: Interview with Gee Moore

Following their shock-recent forced shutdown earlier this year in what was their busiest season ever, the reaction of Bora Bora's closure in Ibiza has resulted in a tidal wave of suprise, dismay and anger accross the globe from both clubbers and dj's. In preparation to the huge forthcoming epic event Bora-Bora Music @ Heaven in London on Friday 12th November, we caught up with “Mr. Bora-Bora” himself Gee Moore to discover the truth about exactly what happened in Ibiza a few months ago, the highs and lows over the years and more importantly, what the future holds for what has been described by many as "one of the best parties in the world".
You relocated to Ibiza in the mid 90s, for those who don’t know, can you please tell us a little about Bora Bora during those early times?
I have the fondest memories of Bora Bora and the friends I made here during those early days, the vibe was cool to the max and word of mouth knowledge was the only way people would know of the place. Sundays were the biggest days in terms of numbers with people coming over from Space when it had closed, it was a great way to party with friends and workers on the island as this was their day off and a special time. The bar staff were multinational as well as the friends and clubbers coming to party, I was set up at the front corner of the bar and was having the time of my life, I remember one day finishing off the set with Insomnia by Faithless and as the last beat faded out the crowed went crazy and then fire works went off from just along the beach, the timing was perfect and that was pretty much the way it was that first year, the timing always perfect and going with the flow was the only way to go, I had no idea how it was going to end up, I was having fun being a DJ beach bum.
How’s Bora Bora been for you this past summer?
In one word "Fantastic", I have never seen so many people at Bora Bora Ibiza than this year. The opening party was one of the best and from that day on we had big parties everyday including every Wednesday and Monday which before were the more relaxed days of the week, I felt more relaxed and as always had the time of my life, it's seems ironic now but I saw more faces from the past years coming back just for short holidays than ever before, the only real sad thing was that we couldn't finish off the last month of the season I had planed to have a special closing party for Oliver Lang, Andy G and Gordon Edge who were great support throughout the season and I hope to make it up to them at some time.
The fact that we and other venues like DC10 were so popular I feel were the main reasons for the clubs to stop the fun, I feel sorry for all those that spent their holiday and hard earned cash to come over and not get what they were expecting, apart from that though it was incredible and the people who came to party were 100% into the spirit of the place.
How’s Ibiza been generally for you?
For me personally I have to say out side of Bora Bora (which has become my sanctuary) not so good, I had a bit of a disaster to begin with, it was my first winter away and unfortunately on my return I found that the next door neighbour to my top floor apartment had built a new structure over the top of my roof illegally and with out any structural support for the walls he'd built over my bedroom ceilings, the bedroom walls were black with mould, the floor covered with water and the ceiling had started to come down in places after some days of rain in April/May, it was too dangerous to live in and so we had to rent an apartment for the summer which was hard to find in Ibiza and very expensive at that time of the year. I have a lawyer on the case but in Ibiza things like this take a long time and I still haven't had a court date given yet, I took my lawyer to the roof to look at the structure and the next door neighbour who has had a building firm on the island for 17 years said that it's ok that it's illegal because every one on the island does it, he said that he would send his builders in to my apartment to paint it with a special waterproof paint to stop the damp, my suggestion was that we use his head to knock his structure down but my lawyer advised me otherwise. I’ve been living on the island for about 8 years, the first years were great, I could do something as stupid as leave my keys in the car and nothing would happen, I felt fairly safe on the roads and I didn't need to be a millionaire to live comfortably, I get about 60 UK pounds a day for a 12 hour set at Bora Bora, the wage has stayed the same as I think of the place more as flesh and blood than anything but the prices on the island have gone way out of control and the roads are more dangerous than anywhere in the world I can think of and that includes Italy. The problem is not the Island and the people/friends which I love to the max but like anywhere it's the people who are in charge legally and illegally and those who only see euro signs at the beginning and the end of the word Eivissa, Ibiza that are bringing the island down.
On the up side I went to a great wedding, enjoyed the island when I could and made more new and wonderful friends.
You must have seen some unbelievable incidents over the years. Whats the craziest thing you've seen?
This is a very hard question to answer as every day something happens that could be seen as crazy so I’ll have to pick out a few examples that I can think of off of the top of my head. We had this Portuguese man dressed up as Spiderman who would dance on top of one of the tables for the full 11-12 hours a day, he had the largest lunch box and made the most incredible facial expressions while dancing his Spiderman dance, he soon had his own fame and was written about and had his picture all over the web and in the music mags, people would go crazy while watching him and in the end had everyone asking who is he and where did he come from just like in the comic books. He was a real showman
What’s been your highlight(s) of Ibiza this summer?
We made another Bora Bora DVD before the closure during the day this time, it was a great day and I can’t wait to see it after editing, it’s the last footage before we were closed down.
Making time for my wife and friends messing around on a boat
Finally receiving the Vinyl copy of Electrogee, it’s always a buzz when you receive a new track especially when it’s one of your own
Recorded a new track with Oliver Lang which I’m very happy with
Meeting some friends from the past who made a visit to the island after some years away
Seeing the Bora Bora web sites finally going up on line
Daily fun in the sun at Bora Bora.
And the lowlights?
The Music cut at Bora Bora and the rest of the island.
Finding out that a friend of mine had been involved in a bad road accident
Seeing the island and coast line views disappear even more with all the new buildings going up
Standing on the silent terrace of Bora Bora and saying goodbye.
Any predictions for next summer?
Greed and jealousy messing with the island

Sorry it's a bit hard for me to stay too positive about Ibiza clubbing at the moment, I have in the past played for outside promoters who have put on nights in Pacha and Space as well as other venues with the naive belief that the clubbing world in Ibiza was mostly friendly and united, now I see how Jealous, greedy and two faced they can be although it was not really the club consortium as we know it that were behind what went on but some that took it on themselves to take action.
I have asked Fritz on many occasions how he feels about Bora Bora and other venues like it on the island and that surly it must be a good thing that the more there is in Ibiza the better the attraction to the island for those that come year after year and he agreed, I see now that it was just a front that he and others couldn't keep up any longer, maybe it got too much that every time Bora Bora and DC10 etc were mentioned they couldn't help but get upset with the fact that it's not their name on peoples lips all the time any longer, I have heard many times from the music press how angry some have got when just the slightest mention of DC10 or Bora Bora within an article or piece about their club has gone to print, “Space just across the road from Bora Bora” Ouch!
We would help promote Space and other venues and events like Matinee, Carl Cox etc, I’d even hold back on starting my sets until Space had almost empted out except on Sundays of course when they had their 22 hour run but even then they were on the Bora Bora terrace and door to push people over to their event, imagine if we had PR’s on the door of one of their clubs pushing people over to Bora Bora, they’d go crazy. There was an attempt to cover up their dirty deeds against us all by support from local residents, well one restaurant and possibly the shop next to that that sold alcohol which were approximately the same distance from us as they were from Space, everyone else close by were there because of Bora Bora or that they were part of Jet who own the site of the Bora Bora venue. The music from Bora Bora never went beyond the entrance, and no where near the street of Playa Den Bossa and you’d have to have some pretty sophisticated equipment to hear the sound as far as Pacha even more so when the gentle sound of the planes went over head. We stopped the music just before 12 while Space carried on, and on, and on…..and yet where were the protests against them? And why did other places all over the island also get visits from the police acting on their behalf? It’s not complicated, it’s all too clear what went on and who were the core behind all the closures, the dance music scene has had enough problems lately and the last thing it needs is what is thought to be it’s own kind putting the boot in, the best thing now is to leave them to it, this time they went too far and I really don’t need any more of their bull sh*t.
It's a fact that NO ONE on the island, and that means Space and Pacha etc have a licence to play music outside, look at the problems Radio one and MTV have had in the past before the club consortium got in their way, yet Pacha and especially Space are somehow allowed to play music on their terraces up to and sometimes beyond 6.30 in the morning, I’m sure you understand what I mean.
Well I don’t want to spend too much more time and energy on the matter really as what is done is done and I always like to convert negative energy in to positive whenever possible, it’s time to get on with planning some fun in the sun, somewhere.
I can tell you that Jet who own the site of Bora Bora now have the licence for a new club to open which they built a couple of years ago, it's the large blue glass building which I played in at night after Bora Bora in the summer of 2000 I think, it's a great little venue and I hope for them that it goes well, I will help them with it as much as I can but for me it's not enough to go back for another season if there is no Bora Bora and other daytime places open the way they were, it's not a good feeling playing with one eye on the door waiting for the police to turn up at any time to stop the fun, it's also a bit much to ask all those that pay such a high price and for many their only summer holiday time of the year to come to the island in the hope that places might be open the way they want, if your in to the music Ibiza has now become a risky island for your entertainment I’m very sorry and sad to say.
On a much happier note the future for us away from Ibiza is looking very good with so many new projects such as on line music label and tours etc. including the special Bora Bora party at Heaven in London with my self and other DJ’s on the Bora Bora label along with Bora Bora friend and very special guest Danny Tenaglia on the 12th November.
