Agnelli & Nelson, The Interview
Reported by Stevie

Submitted 12-07-04 21:27
Robbie Nelson and Chris Agnelli, aka Angelli & Nelson are arguably Northern Ireland's largest Dance music exports, responsible for such monster tunes as 'Everyday', 'Holding on to Nothing' and a whole host of major remixes over the years. After their recent performance at the June Knowwhere, Stevie took a few moments to find out what’s going on in their world.
S: Guys, thanks for an amazing performance at Knowwhere, you obviously put a lot of energy into a set, not too many performers can be seen climbing onto the decks to whip the crowd into a frenzy! Has the ‘visual’ element of a performance always been as important to you as delivering the best tunes?
A&N: We just enjoy ourselves. We sometimes get into it a bit to much. People go out to club's to lose themselves, escape from job, home life or just shit thats going on. We just want people to escape with us for that two hours or so and just have a fuckin party.
S: How does the work-load breakdown between you on the production side?
A&N: Robbie is the main DJ and Chris is the main studio dude. But we both work on each side of things. While I'm (Chris) in the studio working on a remix Robbie (him) will be in the other studio doing a two hour Radio mix or something like that. We will then go into each studio and have a listen and pass comment, then walk away pissed off and start all over again!
S: You’re based in Belfast, how does the clubbing scene there compare to other parts of the world?
A&N: The scene has had a tuff few years here but its coming back.
S: The money, the girls, the wild lifestyle of a superstar DJ, life can be tough, but what’s the worst part of being in this business?
A&N: First off what money, what girls and what lifestyle. I don't think we can really complain about this business, can we????
S: If it all ended tomorrow, and you had to move into another career, what would be your other dream jobs?
A&N: Hamster farmer and pool cleaner at the playboy mansion. You guess which job goes to which one of us!!
S: Is there anywhere you haven’t played that you’d still really like to?
A&N: Again the playboy mansion....
S: Ireland seems to have produced a disproportionate number of musical talents over the years, have your careers been influenced by the likes of The Corrs, Dana, Johnny Logan or Fergal Sharkey?
A&N: Not so much the Corrs (but we certainly would) more so Dana & Johnny Logan. Johnny with his swept back middle parting and white suits with the sleeves rolled up in a miami vice style, what a God. As for Dana, we'd give her one as well. We wouldn't do Fergal though.
S: Together you’ve managed to create a team that’s bigger than the sum of it’s parts, if you could replace any ‘buddy movie’ partnership, which would it be and who’d be who?
A&N: The Odd Couple. Chris would be Jack Lemon and Robbie Walter Matthaw (don't know how to spell it).
S: My girlfriend has ‘Everyday’ as her mobile ring-tone, have you considered producing any ‘just for ring-tone’ releases yet?
A&N: Yeah everyday
S: Avoiding a diplomatic option, is there any genre of music you really cant stand?
A&N: It's not that we can't stand any genre we just don't get some of them, R'n'B we don't get..
S: What are your own personal favorites of the tunes you’ve produced and why?
A&N: It changes for time to time. You can go back to stuff and depending on your mood you can either really like it or spot all the flaws in it.
S: Tea or Coffee, and how do you take it?
A&N: with a shot of whiskey
S: What are your all-time favourite non-dance tunes?
A&N: Anything by Depeche Mode
S: In less than 3000 words, can you sum up your first experience of a Knowwhere night?
A&N: It was alright........or to put it another way, fucking awesome man. We especially liked the indoor fireworks, wicked
S: Shameless plug time, what gigs, releases, supermarket openings etc, are coming up for you guys in the near future?
A&N: New Single over the summer and then new album. Remixes to include your very own Matt Darey, Ferry Cortsen's next single 'Its Time' and an Agnelli & Nelson re-rub to Armin's 'Blue Fear'. Gig's, back at Knowwhere in September, and anywhere else that will have us and opening our local pound stretcher.. thats it good night...........
