Get Ready for the Fast Lane . . . RACETRAX is GO!

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 01-06-04 10:40

If you had to make a list of DJ’s, which was based purely on technical ability and innovation then without doubt one name would appear time and again no matter what your taste or musical influence. With a show that includes three decks, effects and a drum machine, Sterling Moss certainly need no introductions. A true pioneer of cross genre production Sterling’s credibility within the underground scene is without question. After success with ‘R.E.S.P.E.C.T’, which reached 33 in the UK national charts, Sterling now goes one step further and on the 31st May “RACETRAX” becomes a reality.

His first release is a collaboration with non other than the Queen of hard dance, Anne Savage. Internationally respected Anne is at the very top of the pile when it comes to her DJing and production skills.

Here’s a word from Anne: Sterling dragged me out to his house the night before our allocated studio time to go through samples and it took hours. I was like,”can't we just do this tomorrow?” It seemed ridiculous the amount of attention to detail and preparation he wanted to put in and I was cursing away to myself. However the next day in the studio it made a huge difference. We got two amazing tracks done in a day and his methods didn't seem so mad after all.

I caught up with Sterling to find out a bit more about RACETRAX and its future.

Nomi Sunrider: You’re launching RACETRAX on the 31st, is this primarily because you wanted complete artistic control or was it that no other label really offered what you were looking for?

Sterling: To be honest I have always believed in having a creative breeding ground for thoughts and ideas, and while writing for other labels is a much more focused process to create something that fits in for that release, building your own label can be a more fulfilling and gratifying situation as you can shape the course and direction of the label over not just one release, but many. In this sense you can be artistic in the wider picture as you are working on brand identity as well as the individual tracks which contribute towards this.

NS: I’m making the assumption that RACETRAX will primarily be a techno label but will the future see cross genre releases or maybe even a complete departure from techno?

Sterling: RACETRAX will focus on tough dance floor material, reflecting some of the sounds that feature and have always been incorporated into my DJ sets. The foundations of the project lie in techno, but depending on the collaboration or my mood at the time, different influences will always be thrown into the mix, without completely departing from the mission statement.

NS: You’ve had a lot of experience of the industry now so from what you’ve seen so far is there anything you’d like to change and will this be reflected in how RACETRAX is run and developed?

Sterling: Sometimes there is a pre-occupation with narrow mindedness that infects the dance scene. Whether people are discussing which genre a certain tune fits into or which dj should be playing which party, there can be a little over classification which ultimately can be creatively stifling. At the end of the day good music is good music and should be appreciated for what it is rather than packaged, labelled and consigned – this limits markets and audiences and eventually stops the music touching the lives of so many people, because they build up pre-conceived ideas of what the music is, and that prevents them from taking a chance...

NS: You’ve got some pretty big names lined up for future releases which is a pretty shrewd move for the label but will you be on the lookout for any new talent and what sort of thing do you think would catch your eye . . . or ear?

Sterling: There is a great range of artists who have become involved on the project, and I feel lucky to be working with such a diverse range of creative minded individuals. Major talent including Anne Savage, Nick Sentience, Guy McAffer & D.A.V.E. The Drummer all share similar interests in one way or another in this music as I do, and so I thought it would be an interesting task to unite all these ideas on one label, as this will be the central theme that underlies all the releases. Of course I always keep my eyes open for new talent also, and am constantly asking to be sent new material from people I might sense a spark of magic from… Unfortunately it’s not something that’s quantifiable – when you hear something that makes your heart race, that’s usually a good sign! When and where it strikes is a little more hard to predict though

NS: Working with someone as highly respected as Anne Savage on the first release must have been great, how did that come about?

Sterling: Anne and I have similar interests is certain aspects of techno, and so it was a great idea to get together to build on these concepts for what has turned out to be a very interesting collaboration. I truly have faith that amalgamations in sound are what will help this scene to grow and unite, and our joining of minds on this release shows just that. It was a lot of fun working with Anne as she really understands dancefloor energy, which translates directly into her productions.

NS: Gomper Stomper. Described as having “tough grooves, fat loops and cheeky stabs it’s a powerful dance floor destroyer, with a big break that leaves space for ultimate crowd devastation when the tune drops back in, and then continues to build back to an energy shaking monster” you’re certainly not taking any prisoners but how in the hell did you come up with a name like that?

Sterling: He he, you’ll have to ask Anne that one…

NS: A good friend of mine recently started his label and was pleased as punch when Dave Pearce played one of their releases on his Sunday evening show “Dance Anthems”, do you still get that buzz when someone else plays something you’ve produced or is it now just all in a days work?

Sterling: You know, the buzz for me actually doesn’t come from the knowledge that a certain dj has ‘played my tune’, but the real rush is getting the music received by the audience. I have seen people more excited by the fact that a certain dj is supporting their record, than the fact that the crowds are hearing that record when it is played. To stand in the middle of a crowd and take in the fact that a load of people are all getting off and tuning in to your own personal emotions in translation is a very powerful feeling, and one that won’t leave me anytime soon…

NS: What’s your ultimate goal with RACETRAX and how do you see things developing taking into consideration how fickle the music industry and in particular dance music?

Sterling: I’m gonna push to make the label really interesting in terms of it’s output, utilising some a the most talented and creative individuals I know to make a diverse selection of futuristic cuts. The total focus of the label is quality output and I think through these interesting collaborations that are lined up, it should keep the vibe fresh for the party people.
I think fusing genres is the future, and I will do what I can to make sure this happens.

NS: How are you feeling leading up to the 31st any nerves or apprehension or are you confident you’ve got everything covered?

Sterling: I try to put the experience of every year of my life into the work that I do day to day. I’m confident in the place that I come from, in that I’ve tasted the magic on the dancefloor, I’ve seen the burning white hot intensity of an amazing vibe, and I carry this with me and try to put it back into everything I do. RACETRAX is a vehicle to project these ideas for me, and I hope everybody will share the vision of where we can go with this…no more boundries, no more pre-conceptions. I’m confident that the scene will grow the more we try to work together, and this is the reasoning behind RACETRAX.

NS: Thanks for your time Sterling and I wish you every success with RACETRAX and all future releases.

RACETRAX first release review. Sterling Moss vs Anne Savage

Logo side: Gomper Stomper

This is a track with tough driving beats guaranteed to have the masses with their heads down and stomping. The powerful kick is soon joined by layers of percussion, with synth stabs in the background all-adding to the tension as the tune builds. The bass-line drops away as menacing staccato vocal snippets drop in almost ordering your feet to stomp to the beat. It then drops as the vocal snips and FX echo round then the beat builds and kicks back in hard to really get the crowd going once more.

Info side: Hardback

Starting with a powerful kick drum teamed with a percussion loop in the background and a nice hard driving bass-line, the orchestral stabs kick in on the bar as it builds harder and harder towards the break. The beat drops away as synth pads echo around the background in the break whilst short snare rolls start to build the tension and are sure to get the crowd lifted. Of the two tracks this was definitely my favourite although both are powerful tracks and you can see the influence from Anne and Sterling alike.

Thanks go to Yaz for his input on the tune review (yaz@mpfspromotions.com).

Sterling has to be without a doubt one of the nicest people in the scene, he is a true innovator in a world where so few want to push the envelope of dance music and from within it he continues to shift the boundaries of what can be done, his love of music and his development as an artist is something I will always be interested in helping,
the sets I have seen this man pull off over the years for events all over the world have always been the highlight of any night I have played @.
those that know him and his amazing talent are always wanting to hear what he will come up with next, be it lab 4, yoji or any other artist they know that the man is a true artist.
his art is but a reflection of his soul and he has an understanding of this which few if any DJs I have ever heard have
Sterling Moss Rocks!
I wish him all the best with his new label and may it transport his passion of music to the dance floors faster than a F1 race car!!!
