In this second part of our Frantic vs Wildchild Preview, we catch up with a resident at each promotions, starting with co-promoter and resident at Wildchild, Reece Elliot and Frantic's newest resident, Guffy, to see what they have in store for us for the event...
Reece and Guffy, you’re both residents for two of Londons hottest promotions of 2004 – Wildchild and Frantic, respectively. Can you tell us a bit about the forthcoming event @ SEOne and what exactly you’re looking forward to?
Reece: I think it would be totally unfair to pick out 1 part of the night, the whole event at the moment just looks awesome. The DJ’s, the production, the marketing, the general buzz is phenomenal. I’m just proud to be a part of this massive night. Soooooooooo excited, I can’t sleep now with 9 days to go, imagine what it’s gonna be like next week!
Guffy: All I know is that it’s going to a bit of a mammoth gathering. Who better at the moment to get together than Frantic and Wildchild? There both firing on all cylinders right now. I’ve never been to SeOne so I’m looking forward to a nice a new venue to run around and get up to mischief in with Reece and Gem.
Out of the 50 DJ’s playing on the night, is there any one of them that you both can’t wait to check out?
Reece: So many great DJ’s have passed through the club doors @ WiLDCHiLD over the past 14 months. This event, I believe is a reflection of what our punters have enjoyed the most from our events, hence, Lange, Pulser, JFK, BK, Ed Real, Guffy, all back again to tear the place apart! I want to see as many dj’s as humanly possible because they are all superstars in my eyes!
Guffy: I’m fortunate to get to listen to a lot of the DJ’s who are playing on my travels but I’ll be making a beeline to check out Lange, Pulsar, Simon Patterson and Reece as I love my trance. I’m also looking forward to having a butchers at the Posh and Becks of Hard Dance Mills and Rutherford. Of course it goes without saying that I’ll be having a groove to Caz Banx, Little Gem, Barry Connell and my old pocket rocket Shanny. Is that everyone?
Name one record in your boxes at the moment that you know you’ll definitely be pulling out the bag for your sets on 20th March?
Guffy: I’ve got two sets so am I allowed to say two? Nice one! Hunterman’s ‘Discotech’ and and Devilfish’s ‘Mangletramp’ are already looking like the biggest tracks for me this year. I get goosebumps just thinking about them. Both tracks are waaaay out there and like nothing else around.
Reece: Reece Oh yeah, I've got two sets as well! Right ok, I'm picking two myself now... First up would have to be Rockstarz - 'Voiceless' a collaboration between myself and fellow superkid Simon Patterson... come on, you’re allowed one of your own aren't you? 1 for the Blast from the Past room when I go back to back with Ed Real would have to be 'Out Of The Blue' by System F. I dropped this first tune @ Heaven back in Feb and the place went absolutely mental. More of the same this time please!
Reece – Will we be blessed with the presence and mischievous antics of the Reece Police during yours?
Without a shadow of a doubt, they follow me everywhere and I love it! This is their event at the end of the day and they’ll be taking no prisoners!
Guffy – Will you be repeating your cheeky walk to the front of the stage, as you did at Hard House Academy in Feb?
I can’t help myself. It’s a bit anoracky but you know when you get so excited about a tune that you grab your mate and say ‘How good is this tune?’ – well because I’m on my own I tend to run out in front of the decks instead. It’s only when you get out there that you ask yourself ‘what the hell am I doing?’
Then of course, they’ll be the parade – what will be tickling both your fancies, a fresh strawberry, juicy grape or maybe a chewy haribo?
Guffy: Parade?!?! What’s that all about? If there is a load of goodies on the go then I’ll have to have a dabble with them all I think. I’m a bit partial to Haribo’s but I have that problem where you don’t know when to stop eating them and before you know it you feel a bit yucky. ‘Eye’s bigger than your belly’ my dad used to say.
Reece: Are yes, the parade, it’s the trademark of a WiLDCHiLD party. It’s really great the way people have shown support for the parade, they really seem to love it, and have recognised it as part of the night. But what will I be choosing - it has to be chewy Haribo for me all the way or a Midget Gem when Little Gem is ripping the place apart! This time she’s gonna throw them out in the crowd you know!
As residents of these two striving promotions, can you tell what it’s like to play for your individual crowds and what makes them so unique?
Guffy: There’s nothing like the Frantic crowd. Sorry Reece Sounds a bit corny but it’s the mix of people and the fact that they fire it up until you kick them out. When I first started at Frantic they weren’t sure about what I was playing because it was different from the normal stuff but now they make me feel so at ease when getting behind the decks. I’m really lucky in that respect. There’s nothing like your home crowd.
Reece: No you’re quite right Guffy, I know exactly what you mean, but it’s obviously the WiLDCHiLD crowd that does it for me! The best feeling in the world, having worked so hard with everybody involved in this event is that 60 mins up on stage. It’s going to be the icing on the cake. The atmosphere @ WiLDCHiLD & Frantic events is always electric so the combination will be unbelievable.
Reece – Out of the many times you’ve played at Wildchild, what’s been the highlight of playing for the promotion?
Being a huge fan of Judge Jules, warming up for him @ our February gig is truly a dream come true especially how the place was rocking! I’m looking forward to what March 20th is set to deliver.
Guffy – Has there been one special moment in your Frantic residency that really sticks in your mind?
There’s so many to be honest. First time I played the main room at Camden, standing in front of a full room at Brixton Academy with them all going off, playing to a full Frantic tent at Creamfields, so many. If I had to pick though it would be the time I stopped the decks at LisaTime and the crowd went bonkers. I was so excited that I then ran in front of the decks and egged on the crowd. I got so carried away as the place was going crazy that I actually thought about jumping in the crowd. Only thing that stopped me was the fear of getting stuck and the record running out. That would have been funny huh!
What’s on the agenda for you both in 2004?
Reece: More production, working on collaborations with Simon Patterson, the mighty Pulser and maybe some work with Guffy as we were discussing back stage @ HHA back in Feb! On the gig side of things, I have bookings coming up at all my fav clubs including Slinky, Passion, Scream & Frantic. As well as overseas tours for Slinky in Kuala Lumpar, Singapore, Hong Kong + Australia! In terms of WiLDCHiLD I will strive alongside the rest of the team and the cadets to try to deliver an event that people want to see!
Guffy: Loads on this year all over the UK as well as international gigs in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Finland. Tidy Weekender is also coming up too as well as Creamfields on the horizon. Doing loads of bit’s with Mixmag too as part of the Future Hero’s thing – they were so good to me last year and have got behind me this year too. I’ve also finally got into studio after having my ear bent from all corners. Now I’ve been in, I’ve got the bug so there will be a load of bit’s floating around about summer time. I’ve got two tracks on the go at the moment with Todd Tobias and Ingo, which I’m super, excited about. Both are proper guffy-style goodies.
How did you get into Djing? And how long have you been doing it?
Reece: I started going to raves from age of 15 like World Dance & Elevation and was totally hooked from there, I didn’t get my 1st pair of decks though until I was 19. I’ve been DJing for 5 years now and hope to be doing it for a very long time!
Guffy: Been doing it for about 8 years now. I’d had decks for about three years before I played out. Never had any intention of playing in clubs, just loved mixing. I made a mix tape for some friends the week before I went to live in the South of France as part of a college course. Then the maddest thing happened. I got a cab from the train station to home when I got back and the cab driver was playing the tape I’d made!! Turns out it had done the rounds for about 2 months and the local club in Grantham asked me to have a dabble which, a year later turned into a full on trance night. Here’s the best bit… One of the bar staff at the club moved to Sheffield and started working behind the bar at a night that was just starting called Totally Mashed. She told them about me and they invited me over to play. We got on so well that I became good friends with the promoters Barry and Ben and a regular at the night which we now all know as Good Greef. Funny old world huh!
How much of an achievement is it to have got where you are today, and how much more have you got to achieve?
Guffy: It’s been a long slog but amazing fun. It takes shed load of patience and you have to really, really love it. It’s the people who want to get out of the bedroom after 5 minutes of playing and then get upset that they are not getting the gigs that frustrates me. I practiced for 3 years before I played out and the experience and knowledge of the music and scene are what will give you that edge. You just don’t know what’s around the corner to be honest. 12 months ago I was living in Leeds and playing loads up North. Now I’m Frantic resident, signed with Nukleuz, have the backing of Mixmag as well as getting to see loads of the world. I’ve still got sh*tloads to do though. The further into it all you go, the harder you have to work. Bring it on I say.
Reece: Like Guffy, it’s been a long hard slog, but I feel extremely privileged to play the gigs I already have and can’t wait for the ones I have lined-up in the future, especially March 20th. I still have a world to work with and my dreams to chase. I'll never stop!
Reece – If you had one word to describe Wildchild, what would it be?
This is cheating but fu*k it – BiggerBetterFasterStrongerLouderLondon – there you go 1 word.
Guffy – If you had one word to describe Frantic, what would it be?
Inspiring!
