Knowwhere’s 2nd Birthday Review

It has been said that this year is the year of the “smaller parties.” Whereas the big super clubs ruled the roost several years ago there has been a definite movement in club land towards smaller more intimate parties. The small party scene is booming in London at the moment and on Friday 17th one of its leading members celebrated its second birthday.
Knowwhere began down at the infamous 414 in Brixton and started off as a reaction against the progressive “revolution” that was happening across the country. Promoted by Pablo, Anthony Dean and Stevie, the purpose of the night was to showcase the very best in uplifting and banging trance and recapture the euphoria that so many other nights had lost. Two years later Knowwhere is regularly held at the Soundshaft and is still giving people one hell of a party each and every month.
For their second birthday they decided to play those DJs that had entertained their crowd the most over the past twelve months. That meant that the line up could only really consist of the following: Anthony Dean, Ian Betts, Daegal Brain, Dom Pardey and Pablo.
The first thing I noticed when I got to the Soundshaft was the fact that there was a queue to get in! Now how often do you see that these days? A sure sign that it was going to be a superb night. I walked in around 11 and the place was already jumping. Pablo was behind the decks warming up the (heaving) crowd with a fine selection of Knowwhere classics. Tunes such as “Reincarnations” and “Everyday” were lapped up by the people dancing and were persuading those sitting down to get up and shake their ass. A great thing about this night was the fact that the Knowwhere boys had persuaded the Heaven management to let them have the Heaven coffee shop open as well. This was a great move as it meant that people could go and sit down and chill out when the mood took them.
After Pablo had finished the dancefloor and balcony were heaving with eager trance fans ready for Dom Pardey’s set. Dom has been one of the revelations of the year on the London trance circuit – his infectious enthusiasm and blinding tune selections have enthralled people throughout the year and this was his biggest gig to date. Dom played, in my opinion, the greatest set of the night. Starting off with the twisted techno of “Humanism” by Jon Carter, Dom led the crowd into a trance vortex. From beautiful productions such as “As the rush comes” to ludicrously euphoric “Unknown Source” – this was a set for every trance fan to enjoy. Tune of the set had to be “Beautiful Things” by Andain – got the biggest reaction of the night which was wicked to see as it’s a new tune rather than a “heard it a million times before” classic. The room nearly lifted off as this beauty boomed out of the speakers!
Dom had shaken off his nerves and was loving his time up in the booth – Dom we loved it too! 
Next up was another Knowwhere favourite, Daegal Brain. Daegal has had an awesome year so far and all of it fully deserved. His unique style has won over fans across London and he didn’t disappoint at Knowwhere either. Hard-edged trance was the order of the day and the crowd lapped it up. He also gave the eager dancers plenty to cheer about when he played the all time classic “Airwave” not once but twice. Go Daegal!
The soundshaft by this stage was the busiest I have ever seen it, but it was comfortably busy (i.e you still had room to dance) and the temperature of the place was fine. Excellent stuff as I have often found the Soundshaft to be a bit too hot for my liking.
The temperature soon rose though as Ian Betts entered the DJ booth to begin his set. Ian Betts is one of the most talked about DJs in London at the moment and the hype is fully backed up by the substance! Knowwhere are lucky enough to call Mr Betts a resident and it showed that he knows the Knowwhere crowd like the back of this hand as he laid down two hours of unbelievable trance. From the opening track “Seven Cities” this set took no hostages, every tune a winner, every person in the place with a Cheshire Cat Grin slapped all over their face. This was peak time trance to a club at its peak. Tunes of the set included the superb “Love Resurrection” by the man himself , an excellent new mix of “Loneliness” by Tomcraft and Andy Hunter’s fantastic “Go.” It was one of the best sets I have heard Bettsy perform and I think the other 200 odd people in there at the time would have found it hard to disagree.
As people had been dancing so hard and so energetically all night it was going to take a set and a half to keep them dancing until the end. Luckily, Knowwhere had Anthony Dean to call upon to do just that. First of all there was a surprise PA from Stace (a Knowwhere team member) who has teamed up with Anthony Dean to make a brand new track. Stace performed the tune brilliantly and completely live. A superb debut performance. Anthony then stepped up a “bosh” gear and hardened up the pace, but he kept the feeling purely uplifting as well. Mixed amongst the upfront trance tuneage were hits from yesteryear that always get the Knowwhere dancefloor jumping: “If you love me” Nylon and “Troubled Soul” were just two of these tunes played. Anthony then finished off the night in style by playing ultimate Knowwhere anthem “Everyday” by Agnelli and Nelson. Smiles were in abundance – clubbing bliss, achieved!
Wow! What a night. The Knowwhere crew really outdid themselves here and it was great to see. They have always been promoters who care more about just getting people into their club – they want to treat them whilst they are there too. The visuals were as superb as ever and 100 lucky people got a free CD when they entered the club. The club has a genuine friendly vibe and the crowd is one of the best I have encountered – all there for one reason: to have a bloody good time. Add to this the best trance DJs this side of Holland  and you have a success story on your hands.
