Tilt vs Pulse - London's Latest Party Creations

The weekend of the 10th and 11th May sees two of London's newest promotions launch headlong onto the scene, TILT rocking your way on saturday at the completely refurbished SSU: The Club and the following Sunday Pulse at cool nightspot the Medicine Bar. Not necessarily something we'd normally do a feature on but as both of these parties are going to be daytime event we thought it worth a chat with the promoters to see what they have to offer you. Read on for more.

HF: Tell us who's involved in the promotion team and what's your background in promotion?
TILT: There’s myself (Nathan), Charlie Rox (resident DJ at Tolerance and TILT), Nik Johns (head promoter and general party nutjob), and a number of other tremendously enthusiastic and talented people that are making it all happen. We’ve all been involved since May 2001 in a non-profit underground hard trance party called Tolerance. Tolerance was a truly special gig to be involved in, with the focus on creating the best vibe possible rather than on any financial motive. It also had some of the friendliest clubbers to be found in clubland, so it really was a privilege to have been part of.
HF: What made you decide to start a new event and why did you pick the day of the week and timeslot that you did?
TILT: Tolerance is coming to an end with our 2nd Birthday party on Friday May 23rd (shameless plug time! - details at www.ToleranceUK.com), as the crew move on to new challenges both here and abroad. Both Charlie and myself were keen to take promotion to another level, and look to bring the passion and heart from Tolerance to a wider audience.
Since Heat’s awesome day parties took a breather, people have been asking why there isn’t a regular Saturday hard dance party happening in the antipodean scene. We’ve always been huge fans of the day party concept and the natural energy on show, so when the opportunity came up to secure a monthly Saturday afternoon gig at this awesome new club, the SSU, we practically jumped at it.
HF: What's going to be different about your new event that isn't offered already by existing promotions?
TILT: We’d like to offer clubbers a unique experience in everything that we do, from the day party concept itself, through to innovative additions such as the TILTED! Hour, where we are having our main room DJs play B2B for the last hour of the party and really finish the party on a high.
At the heart of it all is a desire to look after the people coming along to TILT by focussing on getting the little things right. We’ve all seen too many a good party unnecessarily let down by problems such as aggressive security, poor quality sound and painful queues for the coat-check and toilets. One of the things that impressed us about the SSU was that they have doubled the size of the women’s toilets, so TILT’s female clubbers won’t have to worry about wasting any dancefloor time queuing for the toilet!
HF: What's the music policy going to be?
TILT: Both Charlie and myself have always felt that the dancefloor experience should be a euphoric one, and for us nothing does it better than the uplifting sequences and driving sounds of blinding hard trance and hard dance. We’re keen to keep the experience fresh by mixing it up on the day in terms of the diversity of styles on offer, and we’ll be playing a number of different hard trance/hard dance sets at each party to achieve this. We’re encouraging DJs to dare to be different with their sets and play what really gets them fired up, rather than feeling they have to conform to any unsaid requirement for a typical anthem-laden set.
We’re also keen to bring a structured approach to how the party is put together. We feel a lot of first-up sets are often too hard because DJs wanting to make an impression tend to throw down slamming beats as soon as you walk in the door. We want to provide real progression by building the crowd up and leading them on to more firing tunes as the party unfolds.
Ultimately the dance floor tells the tale, so by taking note of what works best we’ll keep working towards a formula that gets people moving and gives them that exhilarating experience that only clubbing at its best can offer.
HF: Where (and why) are you going to be drawing your DJs from (i.e. up and coming or established)?
TILT: We are keen to give clubbers a fresh and exciting experience, rather than lock the day into a regular party with the same DJ’s every month. To this end we’ll be rotating the line-ups constantly and drawing our DJ’s from a very wide base. There is so much hard trance and hard dance talent about in London at the moment, some of which antipodean clubbers may not be as familiar with because they are DJs that tend to play at less mainstream nights. A good example of this is Stelvio from Undertow (playing in the Legends Arena on May 10), whose electric acid trance sound is bound to have a few people looking for the line-up poster during his set.
And in the Future Zone, we’ll be providing real opportunities for the talented up-and-coming DJS we know are out there to stake a claim for themselves, and in doing so also giving clubbers the chance to see firsthand where the new generation of DJ stars will come from.
HF: Tell us something about the venue you are going to be using as they're relatively unknown to the hard dance scene. (decor, capacity, sound system, lighting, bar etc etc)
TILT: It was really important to us that we found a truly high-quality underground venue for TILT, so it took more than seven months of searching before we found the SSU Club. When we saw what Winston and the SSU crew were creating in Vauxhall we knew straight away that the wait had been well worth it. With over £1m spent on this state-of-the-art three-room club complex, the SSU Club offers the best sound, lighting and facilities that money can buy, with two bars, a total capacity of around 800-1000, and a stylish setting not normally seen in the underground scene. They also have a few surprises up their sleeve that we’ve agreed to keep a lid on and let clubbers find out about for themselves! I honestly believe that when the word gets out about the SSU it will quickly become one of the most talked-about venues in clubland this year.
HF: Finally, give us the hard sell on why we should attend your event
TILT: TILT is about combining the best hard trance/dance music around with the unique spirit that only the day party experience can bring, all in an environment where people feel looked after and free to get on with the serious business of having the best time possible! Spot ya on the 10th!

HF: Tell us who's involved in the promotion team and what's your background in promotion?
Pulse: First up is Aaron Baskerville. He was one of the founders of Kaos at Southside Bar which proved to be a hugely popular Sunday afternoon party throughout last year. Due to a change in ownership and Aaron's co-promoter returning home to SA, Kaos was left without a home and a full promotion team. Aaron decided to utilise all he had learnt in running Kaos and launch a new party along similar lines with the help of his new partner, Simon Field.
Simon is a veteran of the Hard Dance scene and has been involved with numerous promotions around London as a DJ (including Frantic, Fevah, Hard House Academy, Endorphin, Foreplay and Match Made in Heaven), gaining an insider’s understanding of what it takes to make a successful party. A firm believer that clubs should be geared around the wants and needs of the clubber, the aim is to create a party in Pulse that everyone can be proud to be a part of.
HF: What made you decide to start a new event and why did you pick the day of the week and timeslot that you did?
Pulse: Through many years of experience on the London Hard Dance scene we have basically seen it all and as a result have come to a clear and precise understanding about what our ideal club would include. When we created Pulse there were 3 concepts we wanted to achieve. Firstly, the venue had to be state-of-the-art and of the very best quality. Secondly, we wanted to create a friendly and intimate atmosphere where everyone knows they are in for a great party from the time they arrive until the final encore tune. And thirdly, we wanted to provide the stars of tomorrow with an opportunity to play in a club where some of the biggest names in music have spun their vinyl. We felt that a Sunday afternoon event was the best way to achieve these 3 aims. There is also nothing like Sunday afternoon drinking – one of the last bastions of an otherwise hectic lifestyle.
HF: What's going to be different about your new event that isn't offered already by existing promotions?
Pulse: This venue is completely new to the hard dance scene and hard dance is completely new to this venue making this a unique clubbing experience. We are providing the option to enjoy a Sunday session going hard to some of the best DJs on the London scene or the ability to chill out upstairs and enjoy a drink on leather sofas to the best in house and uplifting trance. We will constantly be pushing through emerging DJs making the event hugely important for undiscovered talent giving them the chance to play on a professional system usually reserved for DJs such as Norman Jay, Jon Carter and Norman Cook.
HF: What's the music policy going to be?
Pulse: As we have hinted above, this is a 2 room party. Downstairs will be the home for our Hard Dance die-hards. We take our music very seriously and will be carefully planning the event to ensure musical progression throughout the afternoon.
Upstairs will be more relaxed and for the first party we will be playing chilled funky music for people to relax and enjoy a drink and a chat. However, we have grand plans to establish the top bar as a stand alone club room in the future with DJs playing the music we feel will work best as a counterbalance to the mayhem downstairs – for example funky house or uplifting trance. The top room gives us a lot of flexibility to bring a much wider range of music to our regular clientele.
HF: Where (and why) are you going to be drawing your DJs from (i.e. upand coming or established)?
Pulse: There have been many complaints recently that hard dance events are becoming stale – people are getting tired of hearing the same DJs week-in-week-out. We can understand these sentiments. We also appreciate how hard it can be for new talent to make a name for themselves in this highly competitive industry. And there is a lot of good talent out there. We want to showcase the stars of tomorrow at our event and give them the opportunity to play a main room set in one of the best clubs in London. That’s not to say we won’t be booking established DJs to play our party – pure economics dictate this but we will concentrate on booking those who we feel will contribute most in terms of performance, enthusiasm and attitude.
For example, at our first party we have Tara Reynolds and Ali Wilson headlining. In these 2 DJ s we see a total dedication to the Hard Dance scene. Tara has fast become the premier female DJ in London through years of dedication and hard work giving faultless performances time and time again. Ali is one of the new age of DJs and producers with over a dozen tunes already signed to labels ranging from Nukleuz to Vicious Circle – and he is still only 21. It is this sort of passion and dedication we want to exhibit at our events.
HF: Tell us something about the venue you are going to be using as they're relatively unknown to the hard dance scene. (decor, capacity, sound system, lighting, bar etc etc)
Pulse: When we were looking for a venue for Pulse early this year we knew what we wanted. A modern, sophisticated 2 room club in a central location which was new to our scene. Three months later we finally found it.
The Medicine Bar (near Old Street tube) has a capacity of 450 split across 2 rooms. The 2 rooms are of a similar size but the basement is designed for maximum clubbing fulfilment with the DJ the focal point of the room and plenty of comfortable seating around the perimeter of the dance floor. The whole club is finished in polished floorboards with black leather sofas and a fully stocked bar upstairs and down. Upstairs also has a mezzanine level with even further seating and funky lighting throughout. It seriously has to be seen to be believed – it's that good.
HF: Finally, give us the hard sell on why we should attend your event
Pulse: What, harder than everything above?
To use an old cliché, this event is by the people, for the people. We are dedicated clubbers and DJs who want to bring an event to our scene with the atmosphere of a wicked house party but in a luxurious venue. The whole concept of Pulse is about giving something back to the world of Hard Dance. Through an event that is geared towards pushing emerging DJs into the spotlight by providing an infectious, once a month party in the style that we feel our scene deserves. This is one beginning you don't want to miss – as a DJ, as a clubber, as a lover of our scene.
Also, at our launch party on May 11 we will be handing out mix CDs from our 2 resident DJs, Aaron Baskerville and Simon Field.
