Heat Presents: Evolution - Review

Reported by littlemissgenki / Submitted 04-12-02 11:52

As the green goddesses screamed around town, many of us suicide ravers headed for another huge firebomb from the non-stricken service provider that is Heat. It seemed frivolous to have metal detectors on this night, for at Heat parties many foreign objects will pass through with one aim — to blow away the cold European winter way of partying to a catch me if you can petrolhead trail blazin' drag race of a party. But this event wasn’t just about the petrolheads of Perth and the Westies of Auckland racin the local pikies, this was, as Heat saw it, ‘defining moments in hard dance. Past, present, future & beyond.’

What a hell of an ambitious project — five main DJs choosing their favorite tracks from one year, and one year only, with the aim that no track would be repeated twice. Had Heat finally bitten off more than they could chew? And what would be the top tracks of the times? Intense debate on HarderFaster had just added to the build up of this much looked forward to event.

The future & beyond? Well, despite our best efforts to get there at 10 we were so behind time not only did we miss just how those shiny cyberkids got down to the music that they may have heard watching teletubbies as their big sister crawled in from a night out in ’98 (hang on a minute—they still are aren’t they!?), but we both had on female panties — definitely mrbicgit’s turn to do the washing eh!

We did manage to catch the last few minutes of Justin Bourne, which was a damn shame for he and Steve Blake must’ve played explosive sets, leaving the crowd in towering infernos up the galleries. It’s always one of those defining moments when you walk into such a show of burning lights, piercing lasers and a smoke filled room, and where there’s smoke, there’s Heat, and the crowd just get higher . . .

Spencer Freeland stepped up as the man of the millenium, and as the lasers of the new era dawned, he kickstarted the dominant evolutionary gene of all out hard house, doing his best to take the crowd with him and progress to a new order of hard dance. The semi-naked apes attempted to stand and raised their arms to the stunningly lit heavens, turning Camden Palace into a tardis of tribal revolution as they danced round the fire. And the heavens opened, throwing out the most intense high NRG laser show, guaranteed to make even the most prehistoric mollusk move toward the light and wiggle to the beat. Like the ancients’ visions around the campfire, we saw all manner of shapes and forms in the eerie green light — how do they do that shit with the lasers?!?

Spencer Freeland took his rightful crown as emperor of the millenium and the crowd was right there as his devoted disciples. And what was the best track of 2000 — who cares? It was all good here in the cave as the tribal dance crusaded into a frenzy with the arrival of Heat’s main man, Mr Marc French. His very presence propelled us to a higher plane and it was time to take to the main stage to get the full impact of this next evolutionary stage of consciousness, as hard house and hard trance combined to form an extremely strong mutation of hard trance.

The great thing about Marc French is he just doesn’t stop, and as they do say scientists do attribute constancy of temperature to a vital stage of the evolutionary process. It was just one fantastic track after another, as Marc re-played the year that the real next step in hard dance music occurred, with the onset of Heat at a friend’s house party. The beginning of a new era? You betcha. No wonder Marc hardly stopped smiling for most of his set, this man always looks like he’s enjoying himself so it’s not surprising he brings so much joy in the crowd.

Walking down the stage we were surrounded by a tribe of happily well progressed evolving people. And we just kept going up, ascending to the black n white bar, where Stretch was finishing off what must have been a progressively harder blast, if the final result that we walked into was anything to go by. Next up was Brad ‘the finger’ Thatcher and one can only assume his nickname refers to a special evolutionary form of DJ whose digits are bonding with metal to form all curious kinds of electronic noises. Oh yeah — and the infamous finger parties, which appear to have given him a very strong and supportive following, of which we now include ourselves.

By now the entire tardis was teaming with hundreds of clubbers: cybers, new age hippie kids, lagerlouts, bacardi breezer chicks, all running round grooving to the electronic music and occasionally getting it lucky and coming across a decent disco pellet. Indeed, it would appear pacman was a central point of the global hard dance revolution, and by the time 2002 rolled around, the game had certainly moved to another level.

Lee Haslam announced his presence with the classic lines from ‘Music is the Drug’, then wound up the tempo with a mix of ‘Firestarter’, making us wonder if we were indeed in the right year, for surely the fire had started long ago and the Prodigy faded by now? It was enough to make us rush back to the main dance floor though, as the next stage of Evolution erupted. Funnily enough, one of the classic moments for us wasn’t such a hard number after all: ‘Times Like These’ not only had the cybertribes singing and dancing, but the group hugs went off. Yes, it had been a long hard week in London, and this was what clubbing should be all about: dancing, singing and having a good night with like-minded people, with as many group hugs as possible thank you very much!

Sadly mrbicgit was due back at the biscuit factory at 6am (no kidding—those jaffa cakes don’t sleep!), so we decided this was a fitting high note to leave on. BK had been his usual revolutionary self at Wild Child the night before, and we left safe in the knowledge that the future (& beyond!) is in safe in the hands of Heat: starting Thursday night with Afterburn and leading up to the granddaddy of all NYE parties, Heat NYE Brixton Academy. Be there, or be left in the past!

Forthcoming Heat Events are Afterburn on Thursday 5th December and Heat NYE at the Brixton Academy on, uhm, 31st December Wink
