Riot! @ The End Reported by Spacehog / Submitted 01-12-02 12:57 I gaze up at Ed Real's face. He is a very tall man (and I am not, but hey, I'm like, so over that... girlfriend), but I swear he has increased in stature over the past 12 months - as if he has swollen with pride over the success of his Sunday afternoon Riot! parties in both a physical sense, as well as an emotional one. Although, I would not be surprised if such a feat had occurred - one thing I've learnt over the course of my clubbing career is that if you ever want a party thrown that your parents would ferociously frown their thick furrowed brows over, then Nukleuz Record's Head A+R man is the organiser for you. This was also something of an 'Occasion' for me - this Riot! marked the FIRST TIME EVER that I had turned up to a club like this with more interest in the funky room. Well, slightly more interest! DJ Gee was in the house and an Ibizian reunion was on the table... but more of that later. Clubs with more than one room can either (a) have the effect of endlessly and aimlessly wandering around not knowing where to stay put and dance; or, (b) get the balance just right. Riot! @ The End has firmly grasped the latter. The dual rooms work like this: The dark room is a sweat-pit of no-nonsense, all guns blazing, full steam ahead, Hard House boshing - only the weak stop to sit down and rest in here. The funky room is a touch more comfortable, with soft and inviting sofas placed along the walls where you can sit, rest, chat, joke, laugh and fondle to your heart's content. The funky room (Bar Riot!) is hosted by The Ignition Crew - Tom Real, Tom Neville, Matt Williams and Hawk Dawson. With four members to this motley crew, you could easily just have them play out the entire evening by themselves, but they have developed a knack of inviting 'TOP-TOP' guests along to play with them too. Gavin Herlihy (from dance music magazine MixMag) seemed to be the one with the biggest grin in the entire place. A slinky harem of ladeez gyrating provocatively in front of the DJ booth to the sound of sexy house and the rhythmic 'popping' of champagne bottles... his smiles nothing to do with that of course - Ministry magazine (Mixmag's sworn enemies) had just recently announced that they would soon cease publication. Although on second thoughts, his elation probably had more to do with the ladeez... The main man of the evening though was Ibiza LEGEND - DJ Gee. The anticipation had a simple reason behind it - DJ Gee had played the last party in Ibiza (the closing party at Bora Bora) that we attended before heading back to Blighty. The memories are still clear, but it's events like these that can cause a cascade of recollections to gleefully flood your brain. And as the speakers released such tunes as Cassius's 'The Sound of Violence', Raven Maize's 'Fascinated', '77 Strings' by Mantronix, Bar Riot! anthem 'Thrill Me' (by Junior Jack) plus THE Tune of Ibiza - 'It Just Won't Do', our memories were swiftly resuscitated and the smiles were firmly stuck. All that was needed to perfectly recreate those Summer vibes was to give me a bucket of sand to dance in while charging me 10 Euros for a beer - Sweeeeeeet Memories! The funky room may well have been awesome, but still, it was tough ignoring the calling of the hard house room from time to time, it being harder and tougher than a pumice stone used to rub the bunions off of The Rock's feet. This month's Riot! brought down to London Town three DJ's who, in my opinion, don't get down here enough. DJ GRH (having took over from a Danny 'GTFRI' Gilligan and Ben Yong's B2B opening set) is someone I had heard before, having played at various London nights such as 'Submaniac', 'Milk' and the Black and White bar at 'Frantic'. I have to admit, I had expected this guy to play a lot more London gigs than he has done recently, especially after playing the mainroom at last year's 'Timeless' at Camden Palace. Ever smiling with a balloon attached to his headphones while knocking out tunes such as 'Times Like These' (Carl Nicholson and James Lawson) and Hani's CLASSIC 'Baby Wants to Ride', the general consensus was that Gary's set was the best out of the hard room - and considering the other sets that were played, that is something to be chuffed about! Hopefully us Southerners will get to hear a lot more... and soon. Next up were Jez and Charlie who proceeded to pound out hard house in a way that was as rampant and relentless as it was enthralling and engaging. From the old (BK's 'Badass') to the new (Steve Thomas's mix of 'Beyond Motion') the Sundissential duo ensured that even the most pristine and conservative of club-posers sweated and gurned until they looked so mashed, emaciated and ill that they would have looked more at home walking up and down a Versace catwalk - the ultimate sign of a good time had! Finishing off the evening were Ed Real, who always manages to keep tired legs moving with his spot on choice of records to play, and the producer of the moment - BK. Now, whether you clap and cheer or cringe and cry at the thought of Chris Moyles playing 'Revolution' as part of Radio One's national playlist, this is not really the issue when Ben Keen steps up to the decks and spins the likes of 'Injected with a Poison' and his own 'Wanna Ride'. He is the headliner, the crowd-pleaser and the one who people turn up to see. I only had to look around to see that even though it was fast approaching the end of a long, hard weekend, people (most of whom would have heard him play some exclusive tracks made for 2003 at the previous night's 'Evolution' run by Heat) just refuse to go home and the hard room remains rammed with eager stompers, even past The End's scheduled 10PM close ... until the security give a sharp glare that translates simply into - "STOP PLAYING THOSE F***ING RECORDS NOW!!". The best Riot! ever? I would not argue with anyone who'd suggest it. Only last year's X-Mess Allnighter would compare, and seeing as the next one of these is due on Sunday 22nd December, there is the possibility of even better to come this year. With a line-up that includes The Trophy Twins, The Sharp Boys, BK, Ilojik, Paul Glazby and EJ Doubell plus all the residents and more, it leads me to almost believe in Santa again. Will I then be gazing up at Ed Real as he DJs in a fuzzy red outfit and cheap stick-on white beard? Who knows?... Stranger things have happened in clubs, that's for sure.
