Heat 1st Birthday - Review Reported by tom / Submitted 28-08-02 12:44 Well, by now we all know the story: from the backyard of a house in Walthamstow to continuously sold out and near legendary saturday afternoon sessions at The Rock and via two fantastic spots at the Camden Palace, Heat cap an incredible 12 months with an almighty bash at their new home, Tunrmills. With several major parties on the same day as well as the Notting Hill Carnival and half of London leaving town for the weekend there's always stiff competition for the hearts, minds and wallets of clubbers on a Bank Holiday weekend but arriving at Heat at 10pm on Sunday night it was immediately clear this was going to be a big one... even the extremely efficient door staff at Turnmills were having trouble keeping up with an ever growing flood of clubbers arriving to claim their place at the biggest Heat yet. First up we sidled up to the bar (get those priorities right ) and then to the outskirts of the main room where we caught the last 10 minutes of opener Simon Rutherford who was having no trouble setting light to a dancefloor already full of madly up for it clubbers... so much for the plan of chilling out for the first hour or two to get our energy levels back after Timeless 10;30pm and the first DJ dilemma of the night: stay in the main room to catch Grant Thomson who was awesome at the Heat Backyard party or step into Room 3 to hear James Lawson at work... in the end we went for James who provided the perfect kick start to the evening. Tune selection was spot on for that time of the evening, tracks that grabbed you by the skruff of the neck and hauled you kicking and screaming onto the dancefloor with loads of his own original tunes, collaborations and remixes like 'Energise', 'It's a Dream' and 'Epidemik' all doing the damage. What a fantastic set, really reminded me of his awesome set at the Convergence Summer Ball last year which is when I first heard him play and was totally blown away (although admittedly I did think he was Nick Sentience for about 3 months ). All plans to take it easy for the first part of the night completely laid to waste, thank you very much Mr Lawson After that we ducked back into the main room to hear K90 spin records for what was the first time for us, could he translate that live magic to a vinyl only performance ? It was an uplifting but very trancey affair with not quite the same driving energy that you get from his live performances, although possibly that's because when it's a live setup he's up there on stage clearly visible going mental behind the keyboards but from our position on the dancefloor we couldn't see him at all. A lot of excellent new tracks that I didn't recognise which was great to hear and definitely the best slot for him to play. By now the 'mills was well and truly full. It was now starting to require a sit down and a bit of strategic planning effort to work out how to get from point A to point B as a simple walk across the dancefloor involved becoming intimate with slightly more strangers than you'd usually plan on first thing Monday morning. Luckily the back corridors around the club allowed the sidestepping of the main room which became virtually impassable between 12 and 3 but one thing that was always pleasant was that throughout the whole time there was no bad attitude present at all in the crowd, don't think I've ever seen such a pleasant crowd in a club that busy. 1:30am and there could only be one place for the next 3 hours as Spencer Freeland who has stepped up to the mark and delivered the goods time after time at Heat produced another stormer, upping the energy levels in the main room and starting everyone stomping away again. At this point we joined the crowd of HarderFaster regulars who'd congregated around one of the cooler spots on the dancefloor (thanks to some well researched inside knowledge of the venue ) We managed to slip into room 2 for the first time in the evening to hear Bronson Vieira drop a few tunes, sounded like there was trouble with the decks though, we later found out the needle was jumping all over the place on every mix until it was replaced halfway through his set at which point things took a dramatic turn for the better, a big shame though as it was such a high profile slot Following on from Spencer, Heat's exclusive resident Marc French made sure he wasn't upstaged by the Frantic resident with another excellent set, could the night get any better than this ? As promised in SX magazine we had Prime Mover's 'Black Dogs', DJ Kim's cheesy but storming 'Get Ready to Explode' and a stream of Daniel Ro's new productions which set the dancefloor alight time and again, wicked stuff And another seesion at Heat that had flown past, already it was time for the closing set and another painful decision as to who to hear play the final set. In the end we settled for flitting between Phil Reynolds in room 3 which was starting to resemble a Turkish bath and Nick Sentience in the still packed main room. Both DJs keeping the crowds at fever pitch, it was just a shame that it was really too hot to dance properly to Phil's set which was excellent as usual without suffering from heat exhaustion. Although having said that, losing that extra inch at the waist will help at the beach this weekend thank you very much Unfortunately too used to the Camden Palace and Brixton Academy we'd made the schoolboy error of collecting our bags 5 minutes early and exiting the club just before what we thought was the end. Consequently we missed the next hour and a half as at the promoter's request Nick Sentience played an extra hour and a half making it an all too rare 3 hour special, gutted isn't the word All in all a great celebration of a year's good work as Heat demonstrate that they are one of if not the leaders of the London hard dance scene at the moment, here's looking forward to the next 12 months. I'd also like to say it was great to see and meet so many people from HarderFaster at the party, think it's the most I've ever seen at one event so far save our launch party which was excellent The next Heat event is 'The Usual Suspects' at the Fridge on the 21st September - for full details click here.
