January's pick of the crop...
01 Secret Development - Day One [Tinnitus Project Remix] (Semidetached)
I first set ears on the original of this trance track about 2 years ago when the producer posted it on a messageboard looking for feedback. Immeasurable amounts of experience later, it's been brought back to life sounding richer and fuller than ever, along with this absolutely blinding remix!
02 Denga & Manus - Firefly [K-Blank Remix] (Asgard)
This is big room uplifting tech trance at its best... the kind of perfect crossover between melodic chords and powerful stabs you could expect going right off at a festival!
03 Krzysztof Chochlow - Reserve Midnight (Midway)
The Russians really are taking over the trance scene - and this release proves it. The original's a quirky tech-trance affair which still has a lot of feeling to it and some incredible production, while Sandra Flyn & Marc Van Linden's mix takes it down a slightly more melodic route... they both hit the spot every time!
04 Senses pres Silver Aurora - Silver Aurora [Frase Mix] (Six:Thirty)
Every now and again a trance track grabs me on the lead notation alone... this is one of those tracks. Something about it seems very special and Frase's production compliments it very well to make an awesome uplifting trancer!
05 DJ Mika - Invader [Wehbba Remix] (Definition)
If Wehbba's involved, you know it's gonna be rude... quirky techno with loads of little details that grab your attention and a huge bassline, just how we like it!
06 Hydragen - Creature Of Habit [Octagen's Abajo Remix] (Five AM)
What can I say... Paul Moelands has really done himself proud in the last year under his Octagen and Re:Locate guises and this remix puts him in very good stead for 2007, full of heavy techno influences and some very evil sounds!
07 Shy Brothers - Midnight Funk [DJ Choose Remix] (Solid)
Having not heard much to write home about from DJ Choose recently, he's been called up on remix duties for this track and what a job he's done! Dark and twisted, while very uplifting at the same time... pounding tech-trance from one of the early pioneers of the sound, definitely a tune designed for 3am in one of the big room clubs.
08 Acute vs Aimar - Still Water [Acute Mixes] (CD-R)
Acute's worked hard at totally revamping his original remix of this track, the result of which takes the form of "Acute Mix 1"... but the gem here is "Acute Mix 2" - a driving, percussive bassy affair which would sound very at home in the boxes of the likes of Sander Van Doorn, John O'Callaghan and Marc Van Linden. Definitely tipped for the top!
09 Charlie G & Future Disciple - Twisted Reality (Addiction Digital)
A wicked slice of driving, acidy tech/hard trance from a Tranzaction resident making a serious dent on the scene at the moment - some seriously solid production here that certainly doesn't suffer from the weak, thin condition that so much hard dance seems to these days.
10 NuSense - Deep Down & Dirty / Twisted Rose (High Contrast)
Utter filth... dirty, techy house with a larger-than-life bassline and a very nice twisted vocal - yet another sign that the High Contrast label really can do no wrong!
11 Alexander Kostruba - Spirit Of Verticality [Stu's Digital Dissection] (CD-R)
Alex is a Ukranian producer I've kept in contact with over the year or so with a serious talent for absolutely immacculately produced intelligent, intricate prog house. This time he's gone down a slightly more upbeat and trancey route, but the same flawless production follows - absolutely superb!
12 Firestorm - Equinox [Firestorm's Solstice Remix] (CD-R)
Hugh's original version of this first came about last summer, but now he's updated it with this "Solstice" version, turning it into a summery piece of sweeping euphoric trance. I gather it's currently unsigned but I wouldn't be surprised if you see this getting snapped up very soon, complete with the original and an Akira Kayosa & Joe Berreli remix.
13 Davide Squillace - I Ment To Be Sharp (Definition)
Cheeky, funky, techno with a simple but effective bassline, absolutely perfect for getting people bouncing!
14 San & Sebastian Moore - Night Eyes [Niklas Harding Blackout Remix] (Fektive)
What I've heard of Niklas Harding's work has tended to be a bit too on the progressive side for me... until now. This is a piece of energetic, sweeping, driving trance with incredible depth to the production and a very catchy lead - absolutely spot on.
15 Lee Osborne - Sliding Doors / Twisted (Reborn Digital)
It looks like a promising start for Lee's own new digital label with these two rolling tech-trancers, both reminiscent of the Ron Van Den Beuken 'stabby' sort of sound. 'Sliding Doors' is the groovier of the two, with 'Twisted' giving a bit more of an uplifting feel.
16 Joey V - Chopperchunk (Detox)
Strangely similar to Cirez D's 'Mouseville Theme', but quite different in others - Joey's knocked up an electro-tinged tech-house/trance crossover with quirky tricks and effects galore!
17 Richard Durand - Inside My Brain (Terminal 4)
The latest one from a man who turned out a sterling guest mix on my 'Adrenaline' radio show towards the end of last year, this is a cheeky and exceedingly bouncy track on an electro house tip, complete with one of Richard's trademark floaty breakdowns
18 Mike Foyle - Firefly (CD-R)
Hot off the back of "Shipwrecked", Mike's just finished putting the finishing touches to his latest track. This is another beautiful uplifting piano-lead trance creation with a slightly grittier feel to it than his previous work.
19 Prestige - Majestic [P.H.A.T.T. Remix] / [Ralph Novell Remix] (Waterworld)
Definitely one of my favourite things from Pierre for a while, the P.H.A.T.T. mix is an excellent piece of tough trance which doesn't fall into the trap of sounding samey. Ralph Novell's techier version on the other side is just as playable as a slightly less anthemic but still solid & uplifting alternative.
20 Insignia - Kaleidoscope Eyes (Five AM)
This is another one of those trance tracks with an electro bassline we seem to hear so many of at the moment, but it stands right out with its production quality and uplifting melodies that gel perfectly with the bassline.
